Product Description

Product Description

A deranged predator on the rampage, a man with a terrible, drug fuelled obsession, a monster who thinks he's a god. The discovery of a decapitated body signals the start of a living nightmare for Inspector Alison Dexter. As she struggles to co-ordinate the manhunt, Dexter is suddenly forced to confront two demons from her own past: the arrival of a man that poisoned her career and the resurrected memory of a life she had to destroy. Returning to New Bolden CID after medical leave, John Underwood leams that Jack Harvey - the police psychiatrist that saved his own sanity - has been murdered. Events take on an added urgency when Harvey's wife is savagely abducted. Baffled by the killer's crazed modus operandi, Underwood becomes entangled in Dexter's investigation and eventually finds assistance from the unlikeliest of sources.

O'Connor is good. Really good. His second book is even tighter, better written and more gripping than the first - high praise indeed, as his debut was stunning. He shows both writing flair and mastery over plot and detail - the essential tools for a crime writer. My only concern is that the plots, in all their gruesome and disturbing glory, might be a window into the twisted and disturbed mind of their creator.

What do you do when you write a stunning debut psychological thriller that holds the reader captivated from cover to cover? Why, you follow it up with an even better book that leaves the reader begging for more. (Please Mr O’Connor, may I read some more?)

When Simon Crouch discovers that his girlfriend is sleeping with a git like Max Fallon, his grief is soon overcome by a hot rage. His answer, in terms of revenge, is to spike Max’s drink with a few tablets of acid. The result of the introduction of the mind-altering substance is that Max’s mind is altered just a little too much and he goes from Max Fallon, bond trader extraordinaire to Max Fallon, vessel of Soma the Hindu God.

Using the speed in which I raced through the book as a guide, this was one of the most enjoyable books I’ve read this year. For it’s suspense and the way in which the story unfolded, I found it to be compelling reading. If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers then you’re in for a treat when you read this one, with the bodies piling up at an alarming rate. A nice little touch was the addition of a paranormal to the book, but you’ll have to find out about that when you read the book…and I strongly recommend that you do.

Gripping and Original 25 Jun 2003
Format:Hardcover
O'Connor delivers again. Acid Lullaby is a blast from start to finish. His characterisation is sharp, the plot is complexbut engaging nonetheless and the murders are hideously juicy. This book also contains evidence of a sick sense of humour - something that 'The Yeare's Midnight' didn't really have. Gruesome, funny, unputdownable.
