Feedback, Flashbacks and Fuzztones 7 Sep 2009
By directions - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
It was excellent to see "Acid Dreams Testament" released on legitimate cd. Also although this has some great psychedelic garage rock the title is misleading. Songs like "Acid Head" really read like a cautionary tale by groups who had never sampled the title substance. Also not all of the songs are even psychedelic in nature but almost all of them have a proto punk nature that makes them essential listening. Most of these songs were taken from garage rock groups that may have performed only a few times in local venues and basically cut a single. However, as has been noted countless times, the garage rock scene had an authenticity as regards the basics of the three chord wonder mentality that later emerged in punk rock and none of the excessive art rock or jamming that although redefining rock at the time, later took away its fundamental roots (although punk itself was later co-opted of course). A song such as The Balloon Farm "A Question of Temperature" has an odd use of feed back and reverb. The Calico Wall "I'm a Living Sickness" (covered by the Dwarves years later), The Remaining Few "Painted Air" and The Painted Faces "Anxious Color" although not intentional have a proto goth quality and although "the summer of love" was suggested as a tag appear to skip it and take us years later to Altamount or 10 years (or so) ahead to creation of punk which was really a return to the basics of garage rock but the stylistic flare of these particular songs reflects the well chosen nature of this collection.

'Acid Dreams Testament' (Past & Present) Various Artists 15 Sep 2012
By Mike Reed - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Here's another must-have various artists CD compilations that I've never before known about, yet I have heard of several of these lesser-known / obscure bands. Couldn't get enough of the powerful Painted Face's "Anxious Color", the two rockers by the Outcasts (most familiar performer to me on this disc) "I'll Set You Free" and "1523 Blair", Painted Ship's "Frustration" (has a nice vibe and feel to it) and the awesome Mouse & The Traps tune "Maid Of Sugar, Maid Of Spice". Also liked the Calico Wall - 7" single "I'm A Living Sickness", the upbeat Velvet Illusion's "Acid Head", the Swamp Rats (another familiar band) covering the Kingsmen smash hit "Louie Louie", perhaps the most memorable cut of this entire CD - the foot-stomping one-song wonder Teddy And His Patches with their underground classic "Suzy Creamcheese" (seems like so many music patrons I've come across know about this song - even folks who are strictly Top 40 and listen to mainstream music) and the rocking Indian Puddin' & Pipe (had to look this band up, to make sure they really existed, even have a full CD out) cut "Hashish". Saw that a good percentage of these bands DO have at least one CD out. Highly recommended.
