I brought this, looking for a laptop for doing work. I'm a software engineer, so I needed it for development, and this fits the bill just right. After uninstalling most of the stuff they insist on putting on computers nowadays and performing a backup of the base installation, I installed the applications I needed.

The i3 core processor does it's work perfectly and the graphics are just fine. Everything worked just as promised and I've not had a single problem.

Although the case and keyboard (with numeric keyboard) feel very plastic, I have noticed that it's reduced the weight quite a lot, which is kind of a plus for me. I have another Acer laptop (more multimedia based) that is a better build quality, glossy finish, but that sometimes isn't practical when not just playing games, DVDs, email and web browsing.

The screen is good quality, although, as previously mentioned, the screen is much more wide than it is tall. This, I have found is useful for my circumstances. I also found it rather bright by default, but turning down the contrast solved that.

Overall, I could definitely recommend this, as it is a relatively cheap i3 based laptop, that has good performance. It's not a 'multimedia' laptop, but serves well as an everyday functional piece of equipment.

I bought an earlier version of this machine for my wife last year and she loves it. About the same time I bought a Samsung netbook, as I thought at the time it would be fine for what I wanted. How wrong I was. Compared to my wife's Acer it was slow and the graphics were not good for watching video from my network server. In the end...and to my wifes amusement I went for the Acer 5742, which was on offer. What a eye opener! Once I'd got rid of some of the software that came free with the machine, it's sparks up in super fast speed and is very quick to process multi tasking (that's the closest a male comes to multi tasking according to you know who!) Video either on the network or direct from the built in drive is flawless, and image quality on the screen is amazing. Okay it only has one one built in speaker, which is bonkers, but either through headphones or seperate speakers the sound quality is spot on. The Wi-Fi connection set up instantly. The key board is really great and it boasts a numeric pad on the right of the keyboard. Battery life so far has been good at 3+ hours watching a video. To sum up, this machine is really very good value for money and does all of the things I need without any issues. I'm really pleased with the technology...plus I used the free Amazon delivery service which can take a while sometimes, but in this case it arrived the next day by carrier - usual terrific service from Amazon.Oh and I did spend hours searching for an alternitive and had a budget of �600, but still thought this was the best value for money.

I recently bought this as I am going to university next academic year. This notebook is fantastic for the job. For such a low price you get a I3-370 which can handle multitasking just fine. I've had youtube, many tabs, work and music open at once and I couldn't see any slowdown. As well as this, the 3gig RAM is also very nice helping boost performance and if you needed any extra, you can upgrade it to a maximum of 8gig! That's 4gig in each port. It also has a nice display with a decent enough viewing angle. The camera could be better, but if you are only using it for conference calling, then it is just fine. The graphics aren't amazing as if you wanted a decent graphics card you would be expecting to pay a lot more for a laptop than this. However, it can play HD movies just fine and can play indie game nicely such as braid and gish. It can also play minecraft but you will need settings on medium. The keyboard is a nice design which makes it VERY easy to clean except it does feel a bit fragile. The numpad is also a very nice edition also. The track pad and buttons work well but they could be better.
Sound quality is so so as it only has one speaker, so if you expect to listen to your music in decent quality then I'd recommend plugging you earphones in or using external speakers.

Overall, for what you pay for, this notebook is exceptional and I'd highly recommend it for any average user.
