Having been a Mac user for some years (iMacs and MacBooks)I thought it would interesting to get familiar with Windows again. I was after a reasonably priced Windows 7 system and this seemed to fit the bill. I specifically did not want Windows 8 and was worried when some reviewers said it came with this installed. However, when it arrived it was setup with Windows 7 Pro.

Compared to a MacBook Pro it is a bit 'plasticity' but what can you expect with a price difference of over £1000! Very easy to setup out the box and it was up and running in around 10 minutes. Initially it seemed a bit slow (a typical Windows trait) so I added another 4GB memory stick from Crucial which made quite a difference. At some future point I may replace the hard disk with an SSD.

It comes with sample versions of Norton and MacAfee which are an absolute must on a Windows system.

All in all, not bad for the money!

My computer had decided to take a dive (a windows problem as it turned out) but I urgently needed another computer. After much research I decided on this Acer. There were a number of reasons but one was that Acer still offered Windows 7 which I was familiar with. Another being the very the excellent value for money.
I was not looking for a gaming machine just one that did everyday tasks: word-processing; spread sheet, emails, internet, some photos and music. This seemed ideal and so far (I've had it for just over a month) I am not disappointed.
I would recommend it for anyone who has similar requirements.

Arrived on time. I am NOT at all disappointed with the quality, features or performance of the Acer P253- M.
On the contrary, and the choice of Windows 7 and Windows 8 makes this an extremely wise buy. Highly recommended

Beware. Although this laptop is very good in lots of ways, it has poor WiFi reception. When I contacted Acer it took days to get a reply and then it was so much work trying to follow instructions to determine the fault. In the end I gave up in disgust, realised it wasn't actually a fault that could be repaired, and just bought power boosters for the WiFi so I could use the machine in the bedroom. All of my other laptops had no problem picking up reception in the bedroom. So if you want a laptop that can be used anywhere in your house don't get this one.

It arrived Saturday morning, 3 days earlier than predicted. I placed the order midday only the preceding day. So very fast service by Amazon (again) even though I didn't ask for next day. Both Amazon and product packaging were just about right. Not difficult to get into and not a lot to throw away. Manufacturers are listening.

The product? I was worried I might be landed with Windows 8, but no. The default was to go straight in to Windows 7. Minimal setup required. The piece of paper inside the lid suggested allowing 30 minutes for first time use. I would have said less than 10 minutes from applying power to connected to my home network. Treat any onscreen estimate as just that. Closer to 60 minutes if you choose to perform a backup of the hard disk as one of your first activities, requiring 4 DVDs but probably worth the effort/wait if you plan playing around with the installation/content. You may want to wait until after Windows (and McAfee, if applicable) updates are installed. There is a recovery partition (some 25 or so Gbytes) which I assume puts you back to factory default. I might try that yet.

There were not a lot of adverts, pop-ups or other "distractions" on first start. I'm used to them, but it does seem that some manufacturers have realised it may put some people off if they are overloaded with "information" the first time they access the desktop. Indeed the only prompt I got was to create a backup (see above). A "welcome center" appeared at some point, but whether iconised or opened in background (a tendency frequently seen in Windows 7?) not sure. Unlike some other vendors (OEM) installations, I didn't feel the need to do a clean install to get rid of stuff I have no need of. It seems that desktop gadgets are no longer flavour of the month.

Nice laptop but it has a few negatives. Speakers are not good but adequate, sound is thin and tinny but solved with headphones or external speakers. Lid is gloss so you have finger prints everywhere. The battery is small and the charger lead is thin. I've given it four stars because it works greats. Nice matt screen, no more annoying screen reflection. All reviews I've read on the net have been good.
Best of all windows 7 & 8.
