I bought two of these for my 7 and 9 year old daughters. Even at their age a lot of their school work and learning is done online. The smaller keyboard and light weight of the product is perfect for them. The children love them and they were easily connected to our wirelss network at home. I did upgrade the RAM to 2GB at the time I bought them and I went for the 8 hour longer life battery as I didn't want the kids to be constantly plugging them in to charge them up, something I find myself doing with my own laptop.
They have had a lot of fun with them too and the built in webcam means that they can see as well as speak to Nanny on the phone now.
Of course they know how to be 'ESmart' and I never leave them alone and unsupervised on the web.
I think it is a great little netbook which is excellent value for money and does exactly what we wanted.

This is an excellent netbook much better than the Happy 1 you can change the Ram yourself very easily. I cannot understand why the makers of these netbooks put only 1GB of ram in them it is so cheap now 3GB would be more useful and would mean that Guarantees were not infringed by people desperate to get these netbooks running at there capability as they soon slow down when getting some work on them, I think the fact that the colour choice may be a big factor on the sale of these which are an ideal workhorse for students on the move with a very generous hard drive and the memory card facility is very useful.I have upgraded to a Samsung 14 inch now as I can't sit comfortably with the netbook and the keys were too small for me.If you are offered one for Xmas say YES PLEASE!!!!

Acer Aspire One D257 10.1 inch Netbook is a nice slim design and looks the part, however the 1gb speed of the RAM is not sufficient for this type of computer it needs to be atleast 2gb at a minimum. Opening programs takes a while and despite me not having one song, movie or picture downloaded on the laptop it still stalls and i have tried to contact acer or get support and have not been able to get through, also unfortunately theres no customer guarantee and so i cannot change the laptop or get my money back because i am not satisfied with the product.

First point to note before the main review..... THE D257 DOES NOT HAVE AN HDMI PORT AS DESCRIBED IN THE TECHNICAL DETAILS. I knew this before buying anyway so wasn't expecting to have it.

I think one important fact to remember is that if you've been working with a high end workstation or reasonably powered laptop, then this machine obviously isn't going to compete. Which means its performance is a little sluggish at times. I didn't expect it to be anything else than it is but you just need to give it time to think before clicking around wondering why things aren't happening.

The build quality is very good. The screen is sharp and clear. Speakers are a bit "tinny" though. The keyboard, naturally, is smaller and takes a little care to use at first. I kept missing the shift, tab and backspace keys but the feel is good.

On receipt it boots into Windows and runs through the setup. First thing I did after that was to make a recovery disk. The backup is over 9Gbytes and needs 3 DVDs - but of course there is no built in DVD drive. There is an option to backup to USB memory sticks but I chose to plug in a small USB Hard Drive and it backed everything up to this in about 30 minutes.

Next step was to get rid of all the junk software that's preloaded. Games, MS Office (but you need to buy the license), McAfee, Norton and a host of other stuff. I have my own AV and Firewall preferences.

There is an option via some Acer Config S/W to have the machine boot into Android. It works OK but personally I can't see any benefit to this. Sure it boots faster but is very limiting in what you can do and a bit clumsy in my opinion. Its not compulsory and you can revert to just having it boot straight into Windows.

Bought this for my wife but I love it! No cooling fan! Perfectly silent in use. Battery life in use is more like 4hours rather than the 8hours stated on the machine however ( I think all netbooks overstate their battery life - time to have an industry standard measure). Good price for this version. Nice colour (but picks up fingerprints too easily). Build quality is good. Runs Microsoft office OK if you have a copy (you can install via the web with the built in installer however). Comes with Skype pre-insalled. Built-in webcam is not great quality but works OK with Skype. Sound on Skype is fine (some have said it is too quiet but seems good to me). Generally use Windows 7 but the Android OS starts up almost instantly so use that when we're in a hurry to get on the net (you can set up this Acer so it starts up Android first and then switches to Windows if you prefer to use Windows). Windows 7 seems to be able to access all websites OK and runs video etc. Windows live email tool works well. It is not lightning fast but for email, internet, Skype and word-processing it is just fine. If those are the kind of tools you are using then I don't see why you would need anything more than this machine. Acer support seems pretty good too.
