I bought this machine to replace a previous laptop which had a problem with the AC pack causing the motherboard to short. On arrival I was impressed as the laptop is very sleek with defined edges and a metallic-feel lid which may not be to everyone's tastes but has the bonus of preventing scratches and fingerprints. It is also extremely lightweight so ideal for travelling.

One problem I had, perhaps owing to paranoia from my previous machine, was the AC pack making an audible buzzing noise which I informed Acer of and was told to return the pack for a replacement. Although the replacement came quickly it was an inconvenience and there is still a slight whistle when the laptop is powered down when left plugged in at the wall, which I can only assume is natural.

Aside from this I have no complaints about the machine itself, rapid processor speed, large memory and the included Windows 7 is a great OP if you don't use it already. Two of the surprise features of the 5741 are the integrated webcam and keyboard, the latter of which is EXCELLENT, almost like typing on a plastic version of the Mac-book with comfortably spaced, responsive keys. The inclusion of a numpad is also a great feature and doesn't sacrifice any of the available keyboard space, I am bemused to why every laptop doesn't have one! The webcam is a neat little gadget which I have been told by friends on the opposite end of Skype conversations has a great quality and frame rate. There is also an integrated mic of good quality so no need for expensive head-sets.

The 3 USB ports mean you're never short using multiple devices/MP3 players/chargers etc. The optical drive is a tad lively and feels delicate but this probably contributes to the light-weightedness of the machine itself.

First of all, I have not had the problem of the fan buzzing as the other reviewer said, must have been a faulty laptop.
For the few weeks I've been using this laptop I have been extremely impressed by its performance. The laptop itself is normal sized, the screen is sharp and top quality while the keyboard is low and a pleasure to use. It is actually out-performing my computer in terms of applications and casual browsing, however those looking to running games don't expect too much as the integrated graphics are pretty poor, so you may want to check out some of Acer's other laptops which have dedicated graphics if you are looking to play games. As it includes the new i3 processor and DDR3 memory running most applications are extremely fast so this laptop would be ideal for the casual browser or student. The 320gb hard drive should be enough for most and the DVD drive works well both reading and burning disks. The webcam faces the user's face which is useful for video chatting and it is pretty good quality for a integrated webcam. The speakers are punchy for a laptop however once you get to high volumes you get a buzzing sound from the bass so if you intend on listening to music out loud I recommend getting a decent pair of speakers. The battery life is average for a laptop but if you're casually browsing you can get slightly more than the 4 hour quoted by Acer but expect 2-4 hours when running programs such as photoshop or any game. Booting up the laptop is faster than I expected, taking around 25 seconds to get to the log on screen.

Pros:
- Clear, top quality screen.
- Powerful processor and memory which are both future proof.
- Webcam is good for a laptop.
- DVD drive and hard drive are both top quality.
- Runs most applications smoothly and quietly.

Having looked around for some time I decided that the spec and price of the Acer Aspire 5741 would fit the bill. I was as usual surprised at the speed of delivery from Amazon even on Super saver.
The machine was out of the box and running fine in no time, I have had no issues with it and it does exactly what it says on the box. Great piece of kit.As an old boy I would strongy recommend the use of a mouse it stopped me hitting enter all the time.

I bought the Aspire 5741 for my dad, who until now has been struggling with an ancient laptop barely capable of running XP. The 5741 provides great performance at a great price and I am very impressed with it. Better still, so is my elderly father who is thrilled with it.
Having read the very positive review of this machine in PCPRO magazine, I knew what I was getting, but to reiterate, it's weak points are that the case is a little flimsy and has some cheap feeling plastics, whilst the screen has poor viewing angles and is very much best viewed from the front. Consequently you'll find yourself adjusting the screen tilt to get the best from the machine when you sit down.
The machine's strong points are it's light weight, great performance, a really decent scrabble-tile style keyboard with separate numeric keypad, and superb battery life, around five hours with light use and we can vouch for that.

My only other criticism is that the machine isn't as insistent as it ought to be in making you create a set of restore and driver disks, though the option to do so remains via the desktop shortcut to the Acer Welcome Centre software. Set aside 60-90 mins to do this when you get the machine, in the long run you'll be glad you did.

The machine also has the usual raft of useless pre-loaded software, and demos of games which are not free. Plus Acer supply the machine with Internet Explorer 8 selected as your browser, denying you the chance to pick an alternative from the W7 menu. Only a couple of mins to download Mozilla's Firefox (browser) and Thunderbird (email client) and another few to delete the unwanted pre-installed software, and we were up and running.

If I though my wife would let me, I'd buy another one of these for myself.
