4.0 out of 5 stars Decent little machine at under 250 5 Oct 2013
By Martin
Verified Purchase
First impressions were not anything special. The machine came laden with bloatware which I removed. There were also 80+ updates from Microsoft which were downloaded (this keeps the wifi busy for a few hours). I wish PC makers wouldn't add bloatware to their machines and could they please sell Windows which is tolerably up to date. Folks who are not computer literate mind find this awkward but I suspect they get this on most machines with Microsoft operating systems.

The machine has Windows8 which is different from 7. Luckily I did some reading up before it arrived.

Having got through the first day of windows updates and bloatware removal I'm happy with this machine. (It would have got 5 stars bar this hassle).

Performance is adequate as might be expected at this price point.

The BBC iplayer and SKY GO service work fine.

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than cheap Atom but not much else 25 Sep 2013
By CAS
Verified Purchase
I needed a holiday "throwaway" notebook for a relative that was adamant that they don't want a tablet; they also wanted to connect (via USB) to older printers so it had to be a cheap Windows laptop. If this is what you're after (Windows, web-browsing, mail, USB printing) this notebook will do fine; otherwise look elsewhere.

Pros:

- Easily upgraded, unlike modern "ultrabooks": can easily change memory, WiFi card, HDD to SSD.
- Removable battery - should be easier to replace in a few years, even if with a copy from auction sites. While Apple may get away with it, I'm not sure how Acer will handle replacing a built-in battery 2-3 years down the line.
- Relatively modern integrated graphics with DirectX 11 and GPGPU (both OpenCL and ComputeShader) support. (so can run WinZip, HandBrake, etc. using GPGPU)
- Good looking, light
- 11" screen compared to 10" Atom netbooks
- USB 3.0 - all but very latest Atom have only 2.0
... that's it.

Cons:

- Huge amount of Acer bloatware! Better use an utility to get Windows Key, download official Microsoft ISO for Windows 8/8.1 and install fresh. You can then install only what you use/need.

- Painfully slow CPU; even when "turbo'd" to 1.33GHz, the dual-core AMD C70 "Brazos" is taxed 10% just to display Task Manager!
- Single-channel memory, even upgrading to 4GB does not help much
- Slow HDD, but upgrading to a SSD (e.g. 32/64GB) helps only a bit - the CPU is simply at 100%* constantly.
- Vertical pixel lines visible on display "screen-door effect" - even for 11" 1366x768 resolution makes pixels visible. Increasing DPI to 125% makes it more bearable but you loose screen estate.

1.0 out of 5 stars worst computer I have ever used!! 27 Oct 2013
SLOW SLOW SLOW at everything this computer tries to do, continuously crashes during tasks including simple tasks like shutting down loading web browser, using windows programs. Basicly incapable of anything you'd need a computer for. The only reason its got one star from me is because I can't put nil.

Having switched it on I couldn't find the Microsoft office that was promised. After a speedy reply to the vendor regarding the omission, I soon found the software in the apps. Good after-sales service.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly light. Nice to use. 25 Jan 2014
Needed a small laptop for when travelling on trains/planes etc

After having my previous 10 inch laptop for 4 years it was time for an upgrade and this has been very good in the few weeks ive used it.

Its a lot lighter than my previous netbook and boots up fairly quickly.

Does what I want it to.

Light, good screen size and straight forward.

I bought this as a cheap laptop to work on papers while I am travelling. To be fair, it has lived up to that billing in part, being light to carry about and certainly cheap. Read more
