I've used many business and personal laptops over the past few years, but having now owned my new Timleline X 4830T for the best part of two days I can safely say it beats them all hands down! This is the new 2012 version of the 4830T with the brand new i3-2350M processor, which is is faster than the previous i3 versions and perfect for all uses other than advanced movie editing and extreme gaming.
I was orginally looking to buy a 15.6" laptop, and was keen on the Acer 5750 (awesome spec from a respected manufacturer). Until I saw the Timeline X. There is no real comparison, other than the price. I was converted. The Timeline X is light, with a very attractive blue aluminium case and, importantly, has a 14" screen, making it properly 'laptop' size. It seems to perfectly bridge the gap between the notebooks and ultra books, but for a very good price.
The inclusion of a DVD drive was important for me so I can use it as a proper replacement for my desktop without the size and weight of a 15.6" monster (I didn't find any svelt versions of these, although the Timeline X 5830T might suffice if you really need a number pad and *wider* screen).
I highly recommend this new version of the 4830T. And I think it's only available on Amazon at the moment (others are selling the models with the slower i3-2330 and 2130 processors). Buy and you won't be disappointed, other than trying to get your friends and family off it so you you can enjoy it too!

I ordered this for my mum based on a Which recommendation as there really are too many to choose from without a bit of help. What impresses me the most is that the mouse pad doesn't interfere when you are touch typing. I've tried out HP's, Dells, Toshibas etc and they make touch typing almost impossible. The amount of times I end up with half a sentence in with the wrong paragraph because the mouse has moved the cursor - too many to mention and really irritating! That's not a good enough reason to buy a laptop but it's a reasonable one, however I really like this laptop and I've owned nearly all the top makes over the years (excluding Apple - love them but just can't justify the price).
I've had an Acer before which was very reliable despite considerable misuse so hopefully this one will last the test of time.

I pretty much endorse the very positive comments of the other two reviews: this light and lovely thing has amazing battery life, and in spite of the inevitable trade-off between power and battery life, manages an impressive 5.1 on the Windows Experience Index (slowed by the on-chip Intel graphics). I would take maybe half a star away for two manufacturing judgements I would disagree with.
A 14" screen with a native resolution of 1366 x 768 is pushing the legibility limits of TN screen technology in my opinion. Fine if you're 18 with perfect eyesight, not so good if your eyesight is less than perfect. To get this kind of resolution on this size screen, I feel you need to go to IPS screen technology, like the Apple and Android tablets use.
My second minor cavil: this is the first laptop I've had with the hard drive unpartitioned. And it's a whopping 500gb too. Previous Acers (with smaller drives) have had two partitions, one for the OS and one for data. You can of course shrink the C: partition with Windows disc management and create one or more additional partitions with all that space. Having data and the OS in separate partitions makes life much simpler for back-ups, defragging, and just organising your files. The first thing I did was to split that 500 gb into 4 partitions (using Partitioning Management software rather than the clunky MS Disc Management tool).
These points are minor quibbles. This Acer delivers a lot at a keen price, and I would warmly recommend it to anyone who needs (or wants) a laptop that runs for ever away from the mains socket.
