3.0 out of 5 stars If only they hadn't included Phil Taylor.... 8 Oct 2007
By XBBX
I tend to lack the enthusiam of Alan Burridge for this DVD. For me it's completely ruined by Phil Taylor. If I wanted to spend an hour watching a third-rate comedian I'd be buying DVD's of third-rate comedians from Amazon's comedy DVD section, not picking up shows from the 'Classic Albums' series.

Allow me to explain in a little more depth.

Unfortunately for those of you buying this DVD in the hope of witnessing an in-depth explanation by the band of how the Ace of Spades album was created, you'll instead get Phil Taylor spending much of his time onscreen making juvenille comments and jokes in an attempt to amuse Lemmy. And of course whilst he's wasting time doing that, the album isn't getting talked about.

I can't help thinking that had Taylor been kept out of the picture for all but a minor part, and Eddie Clarke reunited with Lemmy for the remaining majority, this documentary would have been a REALLY interesting and worthwhile insight to the making of the album.

But unfortunately that didn't happen, so this has ended up as one of the least informative and least enlightening of the Classic Albums series.

The saving grace for this DVD is the original Motorhead line-up getting back together again (with Eddie added via the magic of CGI) performing a number of instrumental versions of tracks from the album. For a Motorhead fan that's probably worth the price of admission alone. It's just a real shame they couldn't actually get Eddie in the same room with Lemmy and Phil.

I'm giving this DVD only a 3 star rating because Phil Taylor's self-indulgent interruptions do a huge amount to stop the story behind the album getting told - and telling the story behind the album is supposed to be the entire purpose of this DVD.

Whoever dreamed up the concept of making DVD's about rock's finest albums is a genius, especially so whilst the member's of the band's involved are still around to give their opinions and memories. Of course, albums only become classic as time passes, and as with every one of those in this series, they were simply 'another album' at the time of recording, yet the passage of time and the fan's views have placed them into the 'Classic' category in the intirim. And also from the fan's point of view, often long-forgotten anecdotes by the band from the time of the recordings are also priceless. Ever famous for their fooling around, not only in the studio, but generally, it often makes you wonder how Motorhead have managed to record anything, let alone a classic album, but you thank your stars they have done and still do. Another great thing about this series is, (and I have only watched Cream's Disraeli Gears other than this), getting the musician's together today to play a couple of those tracks again is a damned good idea. Here, Lemmy and Phil Taylor do so in Los Angeles, with Eddie Clarke 'morphed in' as if he's there, where in actual fact he was in London playing his part. Likewise, for student's of the guitar, Fast Eddie's explanations behind changing key and moving riffs around the fretboard to better effect to originally get the song are very interesting and thought provoking. And as long-time friend/early lyricist, Mick Farren, points out about Philthy - "Why isn't he playing in a band today?" Indeed, a fine look back at what most fans regard as the 'Classic line-up' showing how their 'Classic album' was made. Fabulous!
