Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Consoles aren't normally associated with flight simulations, which usually require too many keys for a console pad to handle the myriad of controls necessary to digitally recreate the sensation of flight. So when an air combat sim finds its way onto a machine like the PS2 it needs to be easy to handle, quick to pick up and engrossing in the extreme. Happily, Ace Combat 4 on the PlayStation 2 fulfils all these requirements, providing a gaming experience that's part simulator and part arcade, with a beautifully scripted back-story thrown over the top.

Taking charge of a variety of military aircraft with interchangeable loadouts, you'll find a variety of missions to undertake, ranging from combat air patrols to ground bombing and fighter intercepts. Graphically, this is a real gem. The in-game models are very strong and a look out of the cockpit windows at the gorgeous scenery is enough to create a real sense of "being there". This is further enhanced by the radio chatter that peppers the fighting sequences, be it calm messages from the air traffic controllers or the excited shouts of your fellow pilots when they take down an enemy. Control is nicely done through the DualShock 2 with the flight controls on the left analogue stick and cockpit view controlled from the right; the button assignments have been strategically designed to be comfortable and easy to remember in the heat of battle.

Flight combat games are quite a niche market, even on the next generation consoles, so it's nice to see Ace Combat 4 acting as ambassador for the genre. For those tired of platforms, car racing and the martial arts there's enough here to provide entertainment way beyond expectation. --Chris Russell

Manufacturer's Description

Ace Combat: Distant Thunder perfectly combines the bravado of the film Top Gun, the edgy reality of Operation Desert Storm, and the sky-high gameplay of the critically-acclaimed Ace Combat series. The end result is an adrenaline-fuelled game of unerring speed, skill and airborne action.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uncomplicated, and brilliant !!!!, 24 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Ace Combat 4: Distant Thunder (PS2) (Video Game)
Ace combat 4 continues the brilliant air/ace combat series, and also takes it to a new level of brilliance.

You won't find hundreds of dials and switches here!! The controls are very simple and easy to learn quickly. There are lots of missions to keep your trigger finger happy, and also a small variety of 2 player challenges (including standard dogfighting, and also a cooperative training mode!!)

The graphics are also some of the best out there for the genre; with the planes and environments all insanely detailed (sometimes it even looks photo-realistic!!)
You also get replays after a mission with a variety of camera angles; and these are worth paying the money just to watch!!

If you want a flight game, without the complexity of the typical simulator; and you just want it to be DAMN FUN!! then ace combat 4 is what your after.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whoooooosh! That was good!, 17 Jun 2003
By Si "si_oatis" (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ace Combat 4: Distant Thunder (PS2) (Video Game)
I used to own ace combat on the psone , and being a fan of flight simulators I decided to buy thi sas it had the great reviews, the others didn't have. At first the controls are very strange to cope with. Believe me, it will take you a day to fully be able to manouver a craft well, but a learning curve is good. The fast paced gameplay is great as while you take down the infamous, "yellow thirteen" you can hear your comrades speaking to you. The moods are great on all the missions and they are all different from each other, all being linked to the ongoing storyline.

Ace combat is definatly the front man in its genre and I recomend this to anyone who knows what an aircraft is.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best game in the series, and the best flight sim on ps2., 4 Mar 2003

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Ace Combat 4: Distant Thunder (PS2) (Video Game)
'Best flight sim on the Playstation 2' is a bold statement to make, but in this case, it rings true. Ace Combat 4 is the latest in a long line (well, 4 game long) of arcade flight sims from Namco, producers of classic Playstation titles like the Tekken and Ridge Racer series. With credentials like these, Namco have produced a game that, like Tekken and Ridge Racer, are easy to get into, are playable and yet have a fair amount of depth. The game itself is well presented, with a great deal of detail in the landscapes and the aircraft themselves, though some of the ground units are a little simplistic in appearance. Thanks to the power of the PS2, the game has no problem in creating large scale dogfights spread out over large areas, which become icreasingly exciting and challenging as the game progresses. Added to this is, the 2 player mode offers the player a refreshing change to just carrying out mission after mission. If anything, this game is a little on the short side, but it's great fun while it lasts nonetheless.
