This is a very capable charger. Reading the manual, about 20 small pages, is essential to make good use of it as its operation is non-obvious. The manual is well written and details every aspect.

I've set it to refresh four (+5 years) old AA batteries (two are 1300 mAh, and the other two 1700 mAh stated capacity) which I thought were finished. On the lowest charging current it's now three days and two of them are finished charging while the other two look to be on their last charging/decharging cycle. Surprisingly, they have reached very close to their stated capacity (~1150/1650 mAh respectively). Throughout operation, charging/decharging current, battery voltage, mode operation time (charging/decharging/last charge) and capacity can be individually monitored.

This is a very useful charger ... not just another gadget.

It's simple enough to use --
When you switch on, the default mode is "CHARGE".
Simply press the "current" button to select an appropriate charging-current. To minimise charging time, I always select 700mA.

The charger switches each cell off individually when charging is complete.

Most important for me, this charger has a "TEST" mode, to do a health-check on each NiMH cell --
Press the "mode" button to select the "TEST" mode at switch-on.
It fully charges the cells, then discharges each cell individually, to measure its capacity in mA-hrs.
I now do this every few weeks, to ensure that my NiMH cells are healthy, and not about to die on me at a critical moment.

Finally, this charger has a "REFRESH" mode --
NiMH cells which have been put through a poor charging regime can suffer from "voltage depression". The equipment using such a cell will indicate "low-battery" much sooner than expected. You might simply dispose of the cell at that point, thinking it has reached the end of its life.

However, a cell with voltage-depression can be revived, by fully discharging and then recharging a battery several times. This charger can do so automatically --
Press the "mode" button to select the "REFRESH" mode at switch-on.
I find it takes anything up to 48hrs to revive a high capacity cell.

You don't need to dispose of a cell unless it shows low capacity at the end of the "REFRESH" cycle.
I have revived 4 dubious cells since I bought this charger ... a saving of £10 already !!

Moved to this model after experiencing hot batteries with a "cheapo" charger. This is certainly not a "cheapo" (unfortunately). Charge and Test functions tested so far appear to work without resulting in hot batteries. A result.

The particular merchant supplied a continental pinned power supply with a continental to UK adapter. Personally I would have preferred a UK pinned power supply. If that is important look for merchants which state "UK Version".

Well they do say that you get what you pay for. This charger is a little more expensive than some on the market but then this one comes with bells on. It does everything it says it does. At first sight it looks a little complicated but if you just sit down and read the instructions all becomes clear. It takes very good care of your batteries and extends their life by a considerable amount. I must admit to being a bit wary of buying it but I am very pleased now that I did.

Would be 5* if it had a UK plug - whether its worth saving £7 is up to you, but using the supplied adaptor makes the plug top PSU very chunky. I had hoped it was a standard 12V 2A input as I have many UK plugged ones spare and hoped to use one of these, but its not - its 3V so unikley you will have anything compatible.

Simple choice - get the Terchnoline with UK plug for £30 or this for £23. As far as I can tell, they are technically identical.

It's an excellent product, if a tiny bit tricky to get used to.

Refreshing all your old batteries will take an age, but that's down to the laws of physics (well, electro-chemistry I suppose) - you can only charge and discharge so fast and to refresh takes several cycles. Regular discharge/charge is fine however.

The only critism, it should default to a standard single discharge/charge cycle when it starts because this is what you should do every time unless you are in a real hurry to charge up. Default is charge only.

I have a confession to make, when I was looking for an 'Intelligent' AA-cell charger, price was my primary consideration. I searched across 3 or 4 websites and almost spent about twice what the BC-700 cost me on eBay. Thankfully I didn't. My decision to buy this Techno Line branded product was based solely on cost, I had budgeted fifty quid, I spent half that!

So was I correct? Absolutely. Great product, "does exactly what it says on the tin", couldn't be happier.

Just one final point, the main reason that I was happy buying a low cost alternative was that all of the research that I'd conducted on the correct charge rate for AA Ni-MH batteries was C/5 where C = Capacity. I also bought the best AA cells in the market: the Sanyo Eneloops 2000 mAh, therefore logic dictates that my charger needed to be around 400mA, in fact the BC-700 provides 3 rates; 200mA, 500mA & 700mA. So all boxes ticked there.

Avoid "Rapid" or "1-Hour" chargers, they will reduce the recycle life of your rechargeable cells!
