5.0 out of 5 stars The cruelty of adolescence, 1 May 2007

This review is from: According to Ruth (Hardcover)
I can't believe how brilliantly Ms Feaver caught the mind of the adolescent Ruth. I too was 15 in the early eighties when this story is set. I also had a younger sibling who i wished dead. It was exactly as she describes- the pain and torment of growing up, the way that Ruth is so uncomfortable with her own sexuality, indeed uncomfortable in her own skin. Both parents are fairly ghastly and we feel deeply for the neighbour farmers who have lost their child while Ruth's parents don't even realise that they are losing theirs. Incredibly moving and poignant, I read it like a memory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book 2007, 19 Mar 2007
By
This review is from: According to Ruth (Hardcover)
I bought this book after reading the review by Catherine Taylor in The Guardian. It is a fantastic read, funny and sad in equal measure. Unlike many new authors I have tried, the writing is finely crafted, there is so much packed into each sentence that I had to slow down and read it properly. I was transported into the seventies world of a fifteen year old girl which may not appeal to you, but the themes of passion and betrayal with the "poetic" writing style make it the best book I have read this year.

This is a gem of a book. Evocative and touching, it leads the reader through the minefield of family relationships as seen through the eyes of Ruth who is on the threshold of emerging from the innocence of childhood. There are no gimmicks or tricks: just a strong story beautifully told. You will be hooked.
