If you are a preacher and want help in understanding what the text means and how to preach the message you will not find better help anywhere (apart from the Holy Spirit himself)

Gooding and others look at Biblical historical narrative with the literary form/structure in mind in order to ascertain the message and historical context of the material. Dr. Gooding is not only a well-known and excellent Bible teacher but he also, like Kenneth Bailey and others, looks for the author's sequential and overall purpose in the structure of the Gospel. I highly recommend his work.
