5.0 out of 5 stars Another classic episode - According to Jennings, of course!, 28 Sep 2001
By
Bob Scratchit (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: According to Jennings (Paperback)
Another fantastic Jennings book, full of all the things that you never quite had the chance to get up to when you were at school. A collection of capers ensue - first locking General Merridrew in the library, then catching a burglar at the cricket match. But it's when, according to Jennings, Mr Wilkins is to leave the school that things go disasterously wrong with hugely comic consequences.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another masterpiece by Buckeridge, 26 Oct 2008
This review is from: According to Jennings (Hardcover)
`Ha-ha-ha....hee-hee-hee,
We've locked them in and pinched the key.'
You can rely on Anthony Buckeridge. This is the sixth book in a series of 25 and was first published in 1954. Most of the characters stay the same in the small world of Linbury Court Preparatory School and Jennings and Darbishire never progress beyond the age of 11.
This time the Space craze sweeps through Linbury Court School much to the annoyance of the masters, especially Mr. Wilkins. For the reader this is another opportunity to witness one comic episode after another. Just see what happens when Jennings (with Atkinson's help !) tries on a glass dome that is normally used as a cover for a bird exhibit in the library. Locking General Merridew in the same library also seems to be an escapade that will bring drastic punishment.
Next you should enjoy a visit to the cricket ground to watch Sussex play for this gives Jennings and Darbishire an excellent opportunity to collect autographs and then catch a sneak thief.
There are also one or two potentially serious moments - for instance the news that Old Wlkie is going to leave is greeted with mixed feelings by the boys and any avid reader. Fo who is going to say, `I..I .. Corwhump !' with the same vigour ?
However, we are soon back on safe territory when an alarm clock goes off at an unfortunate moment and Jennings, with the best of intentions, finds himself once more up to his eyebrows in the deepest trouble.

4.0 out of 5 stars According to jennings, 29 Oct 2011
This review is from: According to Jennings (Paperback)
An excellent reminder of a different time, this book relates Jennings adventures when a space craze sweeps linbury court preparatory school. These books have a real 1950's feel about them and bring back many memories for the 40 and 50 year olds who i suspect will be the main readers of them.
My only complaint is that some spoilsport has updated the currency used to decimal pounds and pence instead of the original bobs and halfpenny's despite it saying in a preface to the book that the book has not been changed or altered in any way.
