Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Acclaim's World Championship Rugby arrives on the back of England's famous World Cup victory, and it is further cause for celebration. Developed by the team behind PlayStation classic Jonah Lomu Rugby, World Championship takes that game's design to the next level. Player animation in particular is really impressive, and there's fine detail drawn in the game's comprehensive selection of stadia. (Witness the exact replication of Twickenham.)

Rugby fans will be pleased to see all the major nations included (and some not so major, such as Japan and the US) coupled with accurate player likenesses. The World Cup can be played through, as can various tours and other international cups and leagues. This is an authentic and exhaustive simulation. And the game plays in a realistic manner, too: passing is simple to effect, kicking is intuitive, while scrums and mauls are carried off expertly with the aid of some good old button mashing. World Championship Rugby is an accessible and lifelike take on a sport that is quite difficult to simulate. Even those who aren't passionate about rugby will find that there is plenty of enjoyment to be had here. --Jonti Davies

Manufacturer's Description

World Championship Rugby comes from the creators of Jona Lomu Rugby, and includes all the key elements that made that game so popular--but now has the addition of awesome graphics, presentation and gameplay for next-generation systems.

Half-baked 20 May 2004
By DUNCAN
This game reeks of a quick cash-in. The 'finished' product is probably 50-60% of the way to being a worthwhile attempt at recreating the greatest sport on earth. The player graphics are weak and most of them have invented names (unless this is a legal requirement, wouldn't it have been easier to copy the names from the World Cup squad lists) which detracts severely from the realism.

Bizarrely, the creators don't seem to know the rules of rugby. The final whistle can go while play is still live. If the opposition kicks the ball over the try line and you touch it down or kick it dead they get a 5 metre scrum whereas you should be awarded a 22m drop out.

Furthermore, there are only three stadia, two of which I've never heard of.

Personally I would have liked to see a management element, but perhaps that will come in time (if the nation hasn't lost interest in rugby as soon as Euro 2004 begins...some chance).

The three stars are for instant playability, a decent attempt at transforming the complexities of set-piece play into something you can do on a console, and for the fact that there is finally a rugby union game on Xbox. Let's face it, I would have bought it if it had been made by a bunch of eight year olds -- it wasn't, was it?

Fun:
I'm a rugby player of 10 years. Loved Jonah Lomu rugby to death. Saw this in the bargin bin so thought I'd pick it up to see how the programmers had developed this game......They havent. The game play is so poor, it's slow, frustrating and has actually gone backwards from Jonah Lomu rugby. Should have left it in the bargin bin. Dont go near it.

Could be so good 16 April 2004
By "boyw"
WCR verges on being a good game, but the controls are childishly simple and haven't progressed at all since Jonah Lomu, while there's no depth whatsoever to the gameplay. For instance, the only way you can give away a penalty is by tackling off the ball - you can't even get done for offside! As someone who knows rugby I'd love to have more detailed control over the technical aspects of rucks and mauls, but instead it just reverts to button bashing.

WCR also has very few game options involving only international teams and a couple of international tournaments (e.g. 'euro nations'?). The whole thing feels half finished as if they rushed it out quickly after the world cup.

Two player it's a quite fun arcade-style game, but the longevity will be very short. Shame.
