Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

While Acclaim obviously hopes to launch a new character into the video game pantheon with Vexx, don't expect another cuddly sprite who would be at home in a Looney Tunes cartoon: there's something decidedly twisted about Vexx. It might have something to do with his witnessing of the murder of his grandfather. After discovering hidden Astani war talons--which permanently attach to Vexx's arms--he is charged with avenging his grandfather's death, freeing his fellow villagers from slavery, and ridding the universe of the evil Dark Yabu.

Playing as Vexx, you collect Wraith hearts. By gathering their energy, you power up the central hub that in turn opens doors to different worlds--from ice-encrusted wastelands and lush forests to hilly deserts and underwater oases. The graphics and music in each new world, as well as the many mini-worlds hidden within, are often breathtaking. At times, you easily become distracted, taking a break from world-saving responsibility to hop into a pool for a swim or perch on top of some pole just to get a good look around.

The controls are fairly straightforward, although occasionally a near-impossible move sequence is needed to propel Vexx up to the next wobbling platform. The puzzles that lead to each heart can be challenging, if not downright frustrating, but there are enough available that you can always go play somewhere else. There are 81 hearts scattered throughout the game, but only 60 are required to battle Dark Yabu. The creatures in each world are easy to slaughter, only a nuisance if they attack at the wrong time or en masse. Those seeking more of a challenge can hop on the sundial in each level and twist it from day to night, which not only produces cool graphical and musical effects, but brings out a meaner breed of creepy-crawly.

The only real defect is the third-person camera, which at times simply refuses to cooperate--but this is more than made up for with the thrill of battling a sumo wrestler about 15 times your size, complete with his jiggling rolls of fat and deep-throated chortle. Nothing beats smacking him in the butt until he looms up on his tippy-toes and falls over. --DJ Morel

A complete hit... 7 Dec 2003
Vexx, possibly one in three of my favourite games. I compare this game to Ratchett and Clank and Jak and Daxter as the game is somewhat the same as these two games. Basically you play Vexx who's seeking revenge on the person who killed his grandfather. It's an excellent game and the graphics are brilliant, basically, you should go out and buy this game, not just for christmas but right now! This very minute! Go on, click the buy button!

Fun:
Well, with only a single 3-star review (with a 5-star write up that suggests it was incorrectly scored) to it's name on Amazon, I thought it was time to air my views on this game.

First of all, this game is darker than your average 3D platform title. Death, the permanent (and apparently painful) attachment of mystical talons to Vexx's body, an entirely unscrupulous main adversary, and your grandfather trapped in a permanent state of torture unless you can rescue him certainly lend the game a bleak edge. Once in the game itself, however, there is a huge amount of fun to be had.

The main objective is to solve riddles that will guide you to the locations of several 'wraith hearts' in each stage. This is not as simple as it sounds, as some of the clues are cryptic at best and even once you've managed to figure out where you need to go to find the heart there will invariably still be some puzzle solving or intricate platform navigation required to actually unlock it. Each unlocked heart gives power to a central hub which can transport you to various stages - the next stage unlocking once sufficient hearts have been collected in each stage.

The game auto-saves after each wraith heart has been unlocked which does help to inspire you through the trickier stages of the game; the game never feels laboured however, and the very responsive controls coupled with a surprisingly manouverable 3rd-Person camera means that the game never feels unfair. The minor enemy characters are amusingly animated and voiced and stringing melee attacks to perform enemy juggling moves is always fun!

The environments in this game are astounding when considered alongside the limitations of the host console. Expansive terrains extend far and wide both horizontally and vertically and the ability to climb to a high point, switch to over-the-shoulder camera and view the entire stage can be very handy when trying to decipher the riddles!

Overall, this is a well-rounded platformer that is challenging without becoming massively frustrating. It still looks gorgeous even today and overall is a lot of fun. It can be picked up for peanuts now and is most definitely worth a bash for fans of Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter.
