Amazon.co.uk Review
Mixing first-person shooting action with suitably threatening creatures from the Jurassic past, Turok: Evolution is a welcome step forward in the franchise. Its secret? Nothing major, just that the developers have gone back to what made the series so fun in the first place. This latest sequel is a clear beneficiary of that decision.

Thus, the game's action returns to the Lost Lands, albeit with smarter visuals and some excellent, moody audio effects. The gameplay itself, while primarily action based, does reward occasional stealth, although more fun will be gleamed from the broadened arsenal of hardware and choosing when to use them. There's a lot to explore, and the enemy AI puts up a far harder fight than the game's predecessors, all of which count as sizeable marks in the plus column.

Turok: Evolution is no classic, though. Its levels are frequently a little too sprawling, and despite the generally enjoyable gameplay, a little more urgency wouldn't have gone amiss. That said, it's a title that's going to reward expectant fans of the franchise, and while it's not cutting edge stuff, Turok: Evolution does offer good value for money, and a challenging, lasting single player mode, with an equally enjoyable multi-player segment bolted on.

Bottom line: it's a flawed game, but still an entertaining one. And thanks to a generous smattering of levels, tight controls and a sizeable game world, there's enough on the disc to keep the player immersed for some time. --Simon Brew

Product Description
Turok: Evolution is a prequel that takes us back to the origins of the Turok lineage. In the beginning of the game, we see our hero, Tal'Set, fighting his nemesis Captain Tobias Bruckner in 1886 Texas. During the battle, a rift between their world and the Lost Lands opens and Tal'Set is sucked into it. Features and enhancements to this new instalment in the Turok franchise include a ground-breaking Squad Dynamics System for realistic enemy and allied squad AI, and an entirely new game engine built to take full advantage of the next-generation hardware platforms. All-new weapons including Variable Payload Cruise Missiles, Gravity Disrupter Beams, and the Swarm Bore each have unique traits and damage. Flight sequences now enable players to soar through the skies on a winged Pteranodon, and scripted event sequences that bring the world to life with stunning detail. There are 32 different types of prehistoric and indigenous life with frightening realism. The game is full of destructible objects and environments: shoot down trees onto enemies and collapse massive rock spires onto dinosaurs. The environments are lush living jungles: plants move as dinosaurs brush against them and trees sway in the wind. The game also features stealth and action based gameplay directed by context-sensitive, mission-based sequences. Great has also been taken with the multiplayer modes, developed by a dedicated team of designers, programmers and artists.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great game but not perfect., 9 Oct 2002
I am a big fan of Turok's on the N64 and when I herd about Turok Evolution being on next-gen consoles I couldn't wait.I bought the game and my first impressions were that it was superb, everything I had wanted out of it. But when I got into the game I was very frustrated about how hard it was.You die very quickly and there are lots of enemies and little ammo causing a problem. The graphics are ok but not superb but the guns are awesome and the true heart of the game. The enemies are intelligent and hide, duck and ambush you making the game a realistic experience. The flying levels though could of been better but are still a break from the normal FPS modes.A good game if u have alot of patience, but very hard.A all round game and a good buy for all first person shooter fans.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok but not great, 16 Sep 2002
Well it's ok I guess, decent enough story and the flying levels are good (good not brilliant). There are loads of cool weapons and that kept me interested in the game for a while.

BUT, and these are big buts! The graphics are naff, we really should expect more from the PS2 not this sub standard rubbish, the multi-player is not a patch on the mighty Time Splitters [...] and the sequel is right round the corner and finally it's all been done before, ok maybe not with dinosaurs or anything but the genre needs far more games like Time Spliters and Half Life and less of the average run of the mill stuff.

So in summary, whilst Im not completley writing the game off because it did entertain me for a while I really think you should rent this first because you may like me be disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Room for improvement, 21 Oct 2002
I liked the environments, I liked the fact that there were lots of chapters, I liked the variety of weapons, I liked the gore and I even liked the fact the enemies were a bit dumb.
The graphics were not the best, the jumping (from rock to rock) was not very well done either... but what really bugged me was the flying... not first person, and you would unconvincingly bounce off the clear sky above you if you got too high. It wasn't so much tactical flying and fighting the enemy either... the hardest bit was just negotiating the canyons and caves. Sometimes when turning hard away from a canyon wall I'd be sucked back towards it as well.
So in summary I quite liked the game but graphics, jumping and flying the pterosaur let it down... so there are other games I'd recommend before this one.
