Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

When Acclaim lost the extremely lucrative rights to produce the official WWF game, they invested in the WCW licence--which promptly went bankrupt. Without another recognisable federation to back, they produced a game featuring ex-wrestling stars. Legends of Wrestling's presentation lacks the polished sheen of WWF SmackDown. Character selection and in-between bout screens are basic and static affairs. This lack of polish is highlighted by the pre-bout introductions, where the wrestlers high-five non-existent crowd members on the way down to the ring; here they inexplicably pause until the next loading sequence kicks in. Once you get into the ring, though, the game has a much more solid feel. But it comes at a price: the slow-paced action. Plus, the computer AI can be poor as it often ignores chances to finish off defenceless opponents. Despite this, there is enjoyment to be had. Fights with three or four wrestlers are fun but as with most games of this genre, multiplayer is where this game takes off; it supports up to five players (yes, you can be the referee). A simple career mode and unlockable wrestlers add to the package along with the simple joy of smashing chairs over your opponents' heads. Legends of Wrestling does push the genre in the right direction with interesting additions such as a counter gauge which enables you to evade attacks with a well timed button press. If you're not put off by its slow nature and basic look, it's an enjoyable alternative to SmackDown.--Jonathan Winter

Manufacturer's Description

: Legends of Wrestling brings 30 of pro wrestling's all-time best out of retirement and back into the ring. You play as Bret "The Hitman" Hart, Jerry "The King" Lawler, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka, George "The Animal" Steele, and more. You can also create your own wrestler or build a team of wrestlers.

Gameplay features 12 bone-crushing match types, ranging from the ladder to six- and eight-man elimination bouts. Single and tag-team career mode take you to arenas across the U.S. and all over the world. Throughout, you can link moves together to create near-lethal combos. Special guest referees are on the lookout all the while.

Legends of Wrestling's TV-style broadcast uses new camera angles and cutscenes. In-depth match analysis and career guidance comes from Bobby "The Brain" Heenan and Captain Lou Albano. Interactive wrestler entrances, complete with crowd responses and grappler taunts, heighten the realism. And if you want to go super pro, use the Create-a-Stencil feature to add logos and text to the ring attire of your favorite legends.

Old School Reunion 18 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This game is a throw back to the eighties style of wrestling from its presentation and characters through to the moves the wrestlers can perform.

The graphics and gameplay are very reminiscent of the old arcade wrestling machines that you used to play.

The plus points are that it has a good career mode that doesn't end after you win a belt (unlike smackdown!)and lots of options

The reversal system is very clever and adds authenticity to any fight that you participate it. It is extremely pleasing when you can reverse a figure four leg lock that your opponent has placed on you.

Interaction with the crowd is a new and novel idea.

Negative points:-
cannot perform hundreds of moves as you can in Smackdown, however, every time i play it i learn how to do something else.
Wrestlers entrance music is not their original music.
More wrestlers from the superstars era would have been nice eg Ultimate Warrior, Macho Man, Honky Tonk etc

All in all a very enjoyable game with a few flaws.

It is not Smackdown but nor does it intend to be, but it is a very good alternative for those that enjoyed the good old days of wrestling.

Legends of Wrestling is game for those of us old enough to have seen or heard about the truly greats of wrestlings superstar era. At last we have the chance to pit Hogan vs Bret Hart ... Ricky Steamboat vs Terry Funk ... the list is endless. But with such a brilliant idea and a lot of hype the games makers had a hell of a job to do. But, does it score the pin or get counted out ?!?!

The blunt but truthful answer is ... this game is very ... very ... poor. Yep, that bad.

It is kind of hard to know where to start but here goes ....

1. The Graphics look chunky, cartoonie and very unrealistic.

2. The in ring movement is sluggish, irritating and in seemmingly ssslllooww mmoottiioon.

3. The create a legend mode is about as in depth as a paddling pool.

4. For some reason the makers forgot to include the likes of the Ultimate Warrior and the Undertaker etc.

5. The entrances aren't authentic.

6. No real special matches ( 4 way dance is about as good as it gets ).

7. Career mode is as lame as a horse with two broken legs.

Phew, i had better stop as i am running out of space. But i will leave you with one good thing to come out of this -

1. You can always ditch this and get a far superior Smackdown Just Bring It.

Remember, you were warned.

Lets set the scene here, I purchased this for my youngest son who loves his WWF wrestling and waited with anticipation this christmas for a PS2 and Smackdown JBI. To say he was disappointed was an understatement. I was made to play with his new toy and game and I hated it. So with reluctance I got him Legends of Wrestling. Now I know some of the wrestlers names, Bret Hart, Hogan, Ted DiBase etc, but some were new to me. However I found the game play exceedingly easy to pick up and INTRESTING. I can grapple with the little one for ages and occasionaly I even win. I have no gripes about Legends, neither should you if you like wrestling games. JBI, Just Buy It!!!!
