Consoles are not short of games in the extreme sports genre, which makes it tricky for new releases to make an impact. However, Aggressive Inline feels that bit different from the rest and emerges as one of the most pleasant gaming surprises of the year.
The sport at the heart of it is inline skating, which quickly provides an ample excuse for some fast skating and plenty of tricks. Backed by a friendly and genuinely helpful tutorial, the key options are all present and correct. You can play in career mode, have a free skate, take on timed runs and design your own parks too.
These modes are backed by a limited but nonetheless varied selection of bountiful levels, each of which holds plenty to keep your attention. Furthermore, each delivers a subtlety different challenge and exerts differing demands on the player. That said, there's still plenty of freedom for you to master the numerous tricks and combos you need to rack up a big score.
The game is graphically very strong and the gameplay is genuinely accessible, offering generous rewards whether you want a quick go or an extended session. Packed with surprises, Aggressive Inline is highly detailed yet blissfully player-centred. It's no huge evolution in the genre but it's still a notable step forward and an excellent and highly enjoyable game. Are you watching, Tony Hawk? --Simon Brew

I am not usually a fan of 'trick based' games. I find having to learn combination of button presses, coupled with accurate timing and the need for double jointed fingers a bit of a turn off. So why have I given this game 5 out of 5.
Firstly, this is a 'pick-up and play' game. Choose a character and begin with the tutorial, and you will soon be grinding, jumping, grabbing and wall riding like a pro. As you acheive more challenges, more areas open up.
The challenges you are given vary in difficulty from the very easy, to the almost impossible. Luckily you don't have to complete them in any kind of order so you can pick and choose to start with (some only become available though when others have been completed)
Some of the challenges start a cut sequence animation which will result in a change in your environment. A giant ball crashing through a wall, a truck over-turning and spilling it's load, a tank firing a shell through a wall and blowing open a safe (and those are some of the sensible ones !!)
In each environment there are hidden objects to pick up. Most importantly there is one key in each area that unlocks a hidden section in another area. Very clever.
As for controls, they are almost instinctive. 'A' Jumps, 'Y' Grinds 'X' performs actions and 'B' is for flips and grabs in the air. Nothing too taxing there.
The novel 'juice' meter means you can skate around for ever as long as you perform enough tricks, and don't fall over too often. It's a nice touch and makes the game more of a 'free-roaming' experience rather than a linear challenge based feature.
Music is fairly good if you like that sort of thing. Stand out track is 'Youth of the Nation' by P.O.D. It doesn't 'get in the way' and you can always turn it off if required.
Any faults ? Well Occasionaly you will disappear into the scenery or fall through a hole that isn't there, but it's not enough to put you off. It also won't take you long to open up al the areas (although finding all the keys for the locked areas might take a while) I also don't see the attraction in having multiple characters. Yes of course it's nice to have a choice of player, but I can't see that I will be interested in playing the whole game as someone else when I have finished with one character. Maybe that's just me though.
Multiplayer options are a little lame. If you and a friend are evenly matched, then you might get some enjoyment out of a timed points race' but I doubt it. The game of '21' was fun for 5 minutes but didn't hold any lasting appeal.
Overall. Excellent graphics, reasonable music, superb gameplay, very addictive and it should pass a few hours. You don't have to be a 'trick fan' to appreciate this offering.
Being a hardcore skater myself ( well just a skater ), i was looking forward to this game more then any of the others, and i was pleasantly surprised by how good it actually is. One major change compared to the tony hawk series is the juice meter instead of a timer. Plus there are more challenges and some of the secret areas you unlock are outstanding like Boardwalk and the Civic Centre. Even if your not a skater then this can still be a game for you, in my opinion this is a "must buy" for the gamecube.
