I discovered Lupen Crook quite by accident (though sadly not while sleeping) when this, his debut, was recommended to me by a member of staff in a music store in London. A serendipitous event, for his work is sublime. Listening to this album one is left with a lasting impression of grandeur, power and often beauty.
Accompanying melodies that are at times folk, rock, pop and classical, the lyrics threaten, berate, sooth and then challenge the listener. The upbeat nature of many songs belies the inky black oppressive lyrics. I find it difficult to believe that this artist is so young.
Aesthetics aside, many of the tracks on this LP are jarring in their composition. Matilda V, for example, changes unexpectedly, seemingly ending uncomfortably soon, and then restarting, only to conclude in less than three minutes. The hauntingly beautiful lilting hook is repeated only three times I believe, and no matter how often I play it, when this song ends I am unsatisfied and compelled to replay. This clever itch, this delightful irritation has thus far ensured that I am impervious to boredom, and have been unable to sicken myself of this track through perpetual repetition.
I believe this work represents a significant contribution to modern music.
If you enjoy smart, wonderfully crafted songs with both musical and emotional depth then this album is for you.
