Product Description

Being a spinster was much easier than becoming the accidental countess and it definitely didn't prepare her for falling in love. Book One in the Once Upon an Accident series. Colleen MacGregor doesn't like rich men, especially rich titled men. Still, her guilt won't allow her to leave Sebastian passed out in the snow. Before he can leave, they are caught in a compromising situation. Under an agreement he will leave and never bother her again, Colleen marries a man she barely knows to save her reputation. Before she can really stop anything, she is whisked to London, where she is transformed into an Original and captures the attention of the ton-not to mention her husband. Sebastian Ware thinks he'll never see the sharp-tongued spinster again. He never planned on becoming the next Earl of Penwyth.or on falling in love. But before he can declare his feelings, he must protect her from an enemy who wants them both dead. Racing against the clock, Sebastian strives to save them both so he can turn their accidental love into a love for eternity. This book was previously published, but has been substantially revised and re-edited for Samhain Publishing. Warning this title contains the following: somewhat explicit love scenes, drunken earls, irritating relatives and bathing activities that leave the floor wet and the hero and heroine exhausted.

Very enjoyable book set in 1808 so is late George III/Regency period. However, those of whom amongst you want a Regency novel with discriptions of the inside of houses/furnishings and clothes etc., will be disappointed. Also the language is modern with no real attempt at Regency speak - I don't think that a Georgian/Regency Earl would say "No worries!" (modern Australasian). Plus, I think that M Schoeder gets mixed up with British titles and how the aristocracy are addressed, from time to time e.g. Colleen introduced Sebastian as "Lord Sebastian Ware", which is correct as he is the son of a second son of an Earl. He later tells her that in London he is know by his family's title of "Lord Penwyth". Wrong! Only the Earl, his Uncle would be called Lord Penwyth; Penwyth's heir would be Lord Ware, unless he had another courtesy title and all the other son's, cousins etc., would be Lord first name Ware.

Now don't let the above put you off, unless you are a stickler for correct detail.

Basic story: Colleen MacGregor is a 25 year old sharp-tongued spinster living by herself outside York on her family's small holding. She has absolutely no wish to marry and put herself at the mercy of some man, especially a drunken rake. Her late stepfather, whom she despised, was a drunk.

While coming back from the village one winter's day she discovers the body of a man half covered by snow. When she dismounts and gets closer to him, she discovers that he reeks of whisky. However, she decides, reluctantly, that she can't just leave him there to freeze to death and manages to get him into her wagon and to her house. There she discovers that he has a wound on the back of his head as though he has been coshed over his head. He also develops a chill and fever, so she ends up nursing him back to health for a week. From his delirious ramblings it is obvious that the man likes women and is a rake. Despite this Colleen is very attracted to him.

When the snow storm dies down, the local vicar and a villager come looking for Colleen, to make sure that she is okay. They walk in, just as a weak Sebastian, who has decided to get up out of bed, stumbles and falls pulling Colleen on top of him. To the observers it looks like the pair are indulging in a bit of hanky panky. The vicar insists that Colleen has been compromised and that Sebastian must do the right thing and marry her, as he knows that his companion will spread the news all over the village and that Colleen will be ruined. Colleen is horrified! No way does she want to get married. However, both the vicar and then Sebastian persuade her. Sebastian promises her that he will return to London and she can stay in her cottage.

However, on the day of their hurried wedding, Sebastian's mother and sister turn up. They have been searching everywhere for him. He's been away for 6 months travelling. However, they knew that he was attending a house party near York and have made enquiries. They have the news that not only has Sebastian's Uncle, the Earl died, but also his cousin, the Earl's son and heir. That leaves Sebastian as the new Earl and Colleen as his Countess.

Relutantly, Colleen is dragged off to London and presented as the new Countess. However, Sabastian receives a visit from a Bow Street Runner. It turns out that Sebastian's cousin hired the man because he believed that someone was trying to kill him and also believed that his father the Earl was murdered. Sebastian headed the Runner's list of suspects, until the man discovered that he had been coshed over the head and left to die. Now it seems to both the Runner and Sebastian that his youngest Uncle, James, must be the culprit. However, they can't figure out why, as James has plenty of money, so gaining the title seems to be the only motive and that seems a very weak motive to kill people for.

Then, both Sebastian and Colleen then experience attempts on their lives.

Sebastian, has fallen in love with his sharp-tongued, feisty, intelligent wife and she with him. The interaction between the two is witty and amusing.

An enjoyable story.

When Colleen MacGregor finds Sebastian Ware passed out in the snow in the middle of a snowstorm, they have both sworn never to marry anyone. But, when they are discovered in a compromising position, they are forced to marry to save her reputation. Little do they know that this will put them both in grave danger. Can a match like this ever turn to love?
This was a great historical romance. Colleen and Sebastian are both likable characters and the mystery keeps your attention. I really liked the character of Cicily and look forward to reading her story.
I read this over the weekend. It isn't a particularly inspiring book. The villains are well introduced, if not particularly well fleshed out. Their motivations are unclear, beyond the obvious "greed," I did like the hero and I got used to the heroine who was single-mindedly annoying for the first bit. Always hardening her heart and the like. It was okay.

Totally cliched and blah 21 April 2008
By L. Starnes - Published on Amazon.com

This book was not worth what they are charging. It was predictable, story lines were not in depth, and the whole book was just flat. It sounded like it would be a good read but then just fell far short of my expectations. I read the other reviews praising the book and calling it charming - I guess it's charming, but not much more than that. There's no sizzle and no suspense. Sebastian is supposed to be a reformed rake, but he's so solicitous and considerate that he appears blah and boring. This is the first in a series, and I'll have to give the next books a pass.

The Best Yet 15 Sep 2005
By Reviewer Jacquie - Published on Amazon.com

I became a Melissa Schroeder fan recently. Drawn to her work because of her involvement in the CHARMING THE SNAKE anthology (I had to have it as an MJ fan), I found an author with strong voice and a fantastic ability to paint pictures. After that first taste, I delved into her e-book offerings, including A LITTLE HARMLESS SEX, THE BOUNTY HUNTER, and THE HIRED HAND. Because all of these books were contemporary or futuristic, I was interested to see Ms. Schroeder deliver on a Regency time period.

I was not disappointed.

Colleen MacGregor has managed nicely over they years. She has learned to be self-sufficient and relatively happy living by herself. She is lonely, of course, but not enough to sacrifice her standards or morals. She definitely has strong opinion, but all are well-motivated with backing described in a brilliant insertion of backstory. Long and short of it, she finds the hero unconscious in her backyard. Being a caretaker, she cannot leave him out there, in a snowstorm, to die regardless of the puritanical repercussions.

Sebastian Ware is a man, a bit misunderstood. He was at a party, last he knew. Now, he's in a strange woman's home, with a horrid headache, and mostly naked. His family members are dropping like flies, and apparently he's next on the list. If that weren't enough on his pained mind, he now has a woman's reputation hanging on by a thread because of her selflessness in saving him. What's a man to do?

Ms. Schroeder sucked me in with the first page. The banter, the emotion, and the whole beauty of blossoming love kept me with her right to the last page.

Melissa Schroeder's Best !! 1 Sep 2005
By M. Nix - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
When Colleen MacGregor pulled Sebastian Ware out of a ditch in a snow storm she thought she had saved a drunk from certain death. However, once she got him out of the cold and into her home she discovered that he had been struck on his head and left to die in the snow. With a storm raging outside Colleen has no choice but to allow Sebastian to stay at her home and, since he is injured, she set him up in her bedroom. She never expected to find herself compromised and forced to marry Sebastian when the local vicar stops by to check on her. Colleen and Sebastian are already wed when they get the startling news that Sebastian's cousin has died leaving him the new Earl of Penwyth. Suddenly Colleen is a Countess and on her way to London with a new husband she barely knows but finds herself coming to have feelings for. But Sebastian had sworn never to marry again after the nightmare his first marriage was and most certainly never to allow a woman to into his heart again. Sebastian and Colleen quickly find themselves falling in love but when Sebastian's mysterious enemy sets their sights on Colleen, can Sebastian figure out who is behind these mysterious attacks before it's too late?

I have read all of Melissa Schroeder's past releases and enjoyed them but with The Accidental Countess she outdoes herself. The emotional connection between Sebastian and Colleen is so richly woven that the reader finds themselves enthralled waiting for them to have the happy ending they so deserve. As I have said in the past, Melissa Schroeder's books have been entertaining reading but if The Accidental Countess is an example of what we can expect in the future then Melissa Schroeder's future looks bright indeed.
