Thinking of buying the second gen iphone, but am confused. Can you access the internet while you're away from WIFI hotspots, and if so is there an additional cost - if you can't it doesn't seem to be worth buying as I already have an IPOD touch

I beleive on the iphone you may be able to access the internet through your service provider (i.e. download data) though it will depend upon the phone tariff you're on etc. I beleive O2 do an unlimited data tariff (fair useage of course) though suggest you check the phone tariff you're planning on using before buying the iphone.

It depends on your phone network and what you contract/payasyougo package enables you to do.
