Amazon.co.uk Review

Written by a working writer and database designer with the man who co-wrote Access itself, this book successfully combines a mastery of its subject with a lucid, first-person writing style unusual--to say the least--in books on databases. The result is a readable book about an application type notorious for its dullness.

The authors assume a familiarity with Windows and the Office environment, but start with firing up Access 2000 for the first time. They assume no previous knowledge of database theory or practice. Accessible Access 2000 isn't just a book for beginners though, it's for those who want to use Access 2000 for real-world applications. To achieve this, the authors cover the features you need in depth while merely mentioning those you don't. In practice, a decade of creeping "featuritus" means you don't need most of them. The devil, though, is in the detail. This is where Accessible Access 2000 really scores. For example, on page 111 they discuss the difference between a null field and a zero length string. Null fields are ignored by Access 2000, so taking an average value when values are only entered for 20 of 30 records works correctly with null fields but not with zero length fields. Practical detail like this can save you hours of anguish. In fact, even if you don't actually have a use for databases, the style encourages enthusiasm. Who'd have thought closure--which enables you to build forms which take their input from an answer table--could be interesting?

The authors take you as far as making use of multiple tables. You'll learn how to join multiple tables, query them and produce forms to display their contents. You'll even enjoy learning it. Accessible Access 2000 is easily the most accessible (pun intended) book on Access available. --Steve Patient

Product Description

Written by the team who brought you "Inside Relational Databases". Bill Marklyn, as the development manager for the first two major releases of Access, oversaw the entire design and so provides an intimate knowledge of the product. Mark Whitehorn designs and builds databases but is best known for his popular and long running database column in the UK's "Personal Computer World". "These two authors make a perfect team. Bill Marklyn knows the product inside out and Mark Whitehorn makes the information accessible." Neil Fawcett, Group Technical Editor, VNU Business Publications "PCW and Amazon.co.uk contributor Mark Whitehorn is that rare combination - an expert in his field, databases, and a fine writer too, with a talent for honing a complex subject down to its essentials." Tamsin Todd - Computers & Internet Editor, Amazon.co.uk Accessible Access 2000 assumes that you start with no knowledge of Access or databases and takes you to the point where you can create and use a multi-table database. (For more information, see chapter one). It is written in the highly readable style of the authors' previous book; a style that was much appreciated by readers: " "Inside Relational Databases" is excellent. It is clearly and concisely written and full of humorous asides which ease the reader through an otherwise weighty topic. Probably the most engaging technical book I have read." Paul McGowan "As a result of ordering and studying your excellent book, "Inside Relational Databases", it is now required reading for all my students. This e-mail is simply to say thank you for a superb and understandable publication. I've learned a lot from it, and I'm sure my delegates will too." Ian Wilshaw

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, 24 May 2002

This review is from: Accessible Access 2000 (Paperback)
A very easy to read book. A great introduction for first timers as well as those who like me, usually like to jump in and explore before reading any manuals! So this fills in the gaps.

This is written in a very friendly manner. Almost like you have a friend at your side having a conversation with you and "holding your hand".

Access is a very powerful programme and can be very daunting. But the writers here have done an excellent job of making it very err....Accessible!

5.0 out of 5 stars Accessible Access 2000, 17 Oct 2000

You want to use MS Access 2000 to build a database, that much you know, but where to start and what to learn, you don't know !

The two authors will answer that question by their selection of features to learn to give the reader a solid working knowledge of Access, and by acting as a filter they enable the reader to focus 100 % on learning. They don't base their selection on what is easy to learn, but which of Access' intimidating abundance of features and possibilities you need to know.

The book is divided into 3 parts, the first part covers how to make use of Wizards and automation in developing the 4 basic objects of every database: Tables, Queries, Forms and Reports. Part 2 expands on these topics and will teach you how to design the objects without the wizards, and part 3 covers the more complex parts in a database design and how to make all the objects work together.

To accompany this book I strongly recommend "Inside Relational Databases" (ISBN 354076092X) to learn about database design and theory, and "Running Microsoft Access 2000" (ISBN 1572319348) to learn more about the software, its features and how and when to make use of them.

With this book, compared to other computer books, you do not end up with a book that tries to be everything for everyone but is nothing for no one, but a book that's perfect for the Beginning/Intermediate user that wants to build a solid framework before moving on to the more advanced parts of Access databases and the 1000+ page reference books.

5.0 out of 5 stars This one is just right, 18 Mar 2003
By Elizabeth Cunningham - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Accessible Access 2000 (Paperback)
I bought three books to try to learn Access and it was just like The Three Bears. Using Access 2000 (Que) was too big--a complete reference that will allow me to master Access in about 3 years. Quick Course in Access 2000 (Microsoft) was too little--really just an overview. But this book was just right. It has a CD with one or more files for each chapter to work on. Part I is the introduction and then Part II is the overview section with chapters on the database window, tables, queries, forms and reports, primarily using wizards. Part III goes into each of those topics in more depth. Part IV covers more complex databases. I found it easy to go from the overview chapters in Part II to the detail chapters in Part III and then skip to the more advanced topics in Part IV when I needed to. This is the book to teach yourself from. Then you can go to the Papa Bear books.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best kept secrets in access 2000 books, 23 Jun 2001
By mike perry - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Accessible Access 2000 (Paperback)
I just happened to see this book on the shelf and it was quite smaller than the other access 2000 "telephone books" beside it. This book is written by one of the original program archectects of Microsoft Access was it was first invented.

A WONDERFUL read, IDG should have bought out the contract and had this book as their Access for Dummies. Eventhough IDGs version is good, this is shoulders above the rest.

The authors share with you how to master and UNDERSTAND the basic features so you can get going with the program. They even state in the book that they only cover the 20% of all the features and want to make sure you understand the 20% first BEFORE grabbing the "phonebooks". Like they said, if you don't know the basics inside and out, the rest will be a waste of your time. Wonderful, personable read. bravo
