(TES Teacher ) --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Product Description

The Access to History series is the most popular and trusted series for AS and A level history students. The new editions combine all the strengths of this well-loved series with a new design and features that allow all students access to the content and study skills needed to achieve exam success.

This new edition is revised and updated for the new 2008 AS and A2 specifications for AQA and Edexcel. It provides accessible and complete coverage of this period, from the presidential situation in 1890 and the reasons for entering the First World War, to the policies of the New Deal and the impacts of the Second World War. It charts the changing optimism of the time, from the apparent economic stability of the 1920s, the devastation of the Depression, to the optimism under Roosevelt's presidency.

Throughout the book, key dates, terms and issues are highlighted, and historical interpretations of key debates are outlined. Summary diagrams are included to consolidate knowledge and understanding of the period, and exam-style questions and tips written by examiners for each specification provide the opportunity to develop exam skills.

Helpful introduction for students new to subject. Clements is careful to show that Hoover, though scarcely up to the task of overcoming the Depression, wasn't quite the disaster of historical legend. Equally, FDR didn't turn everything he touched to gold. Perhaps a litte light on the transformation of electoral politics in the 1930s, but good nonetheless.

I used the book to help me on my AS module paper on FDR, so have used only half of the book. For any AS student studying American history on the relevant period, I'd say it's a must. It gives an overview of the period, telling you about the problems facing FDR, legislation, impacts, opposition etc, presenting the information in a comprehensive format, tailored for AS students. When you start studying the subject this really does help. However, if you're aiming for high grades, I wouldn't rely on the book alone. It doesn't provide enough depth to give you the full picture. Nevertheless, I'd say this is the best place to start.
