Product Description

Paul Meier is a leading dialect coach for theatre and films. This is his best-selling stage-dialects manual for actors. With 350 pages and 12 accompanying CDs, this teaches the following: Afrikaans (South Africa), American Deep South (Mississippi/Georgia/Alabama), American Southern (Kentucky/Tennessee), Australian, Cockney, "Downeast" New England, French, General American, German, Hampshire, Indian, Irish, Italian, Liverpool, New York, Northern Ireland, Russian, Scottish, South Boston, Spanish (Castilian & Colonial "Spanishes"), Standard British English (Received Pronunciation), Welsh, Yiddish, and Yorkshire. Coaching many famous actors (Tobey Maguire, Tom Wilkinson, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, etc.), Meier has also taught dialects at RADA, LAMDA, Webber-Douglas, the North Carolina School of the Arts, and other famous schools. In addition to his easy-to-follow practice material, for each dialect Paul coaches you in two monologues (one male and one female) from a well-known play or film, and links you to the hundreds of online recordings of native dialect speakers on his International Dialects of English Archive (IDEA). Further enhancing the value of the book are his interactive IPA phonetics charts, unique "show-specific" dialect CDs for hundreds of plays and musicals, custom CD-recording, and phone-coaching services. Easy enough for the beginner, rigorous enough for the experienced professional.

Richly detailed and thoroughly accessible, Accents and Dialects for Stage and Screen eschews quasi-helpful metaphors and idiosyncratic 'respelling' systems in favour of high quality primary source material and the best step-by-step guidance you can get with learning an accent in lieu of hiring a Dialect Coach in person.

This complete collection of Paul Meier's individual accent CDs outlines all the most frequently requested accents from the exhaustive list of actors that he coaches every day.

ADFSS uses IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) to show exactly how sounds shift from accent to accent and accurately map where to place them, giving a clear and user-friendly breakdown of all the terms used.

Each section is based on clips of native speakers, which can be found online at IDEA (International Dialects of English Archive), the vast online resource of accent samples of which Paul Meier is the Founder and Director.

Sound changes are broken down in order of importance, with the most distinguishing sounds first and additional touches later on in the section should you have time to incorporate these too. To help you learn the sound changes, they are demonstrated by the author in specially devised practice sentences.

For anyone who wants to speak in an accent other than their own, this book excels at demystifying the process, and will also fuel your curiosity for the subject of accents in their wider context. As a Dialect Coach myself, I would not hesitate to recommend it to my clients.

If you are like me then this book will sit on your shelf for many years to come and be referred to every time you take on a new role and need to discover a new voice. This book covers more accents and dialects than you could hope to require in a lifetime of performance.

Paul Meier's instructions are clear and concise with the CDs helping to reinforce the learning. The man clearly knows his dipthongs from his glottal stops and this book will enable you to create the vocal style you need.

Key sound groups from each accent are explained phonetically with instructions to help you shape the sounds referred to. Sets of words are listed to help you practice and achieve that pattern of speech and further examples incorporate set pieces of dialogue which can be heard and copied.
