Product Description

Review

Alistair Smith's book describes where the science of learning and the art of teaching meet. It offers to teachers something rich and powerful. Not a simple blueprint, but a set of well researched guiding principles on which to build more effective learning. The theory is there to keep the practice visionary and the practice is there to keep the theory honest. It recognises that teaching is not a mechanistic process but a performing art - one that is rooted in an understanding of how learning works and the potential of the human brain to be the architect of its own intelligence. Professor John MacBeath, Director, Quality in Education Centre, University of Strathclyde

As a Head of Department of Modern Languages, I bought this book for my own reference. Having read it, I ordered copies for my department. Along with a clear explanation of theory, the practical suggestions help you to put theory into practice. I strongly disagree with the reviewer from Manchester - it's the teachers who need to do the learning, in order to make their teaching most effective! This is a book that gives a great introduction to Accelerated Learning. We have now tried out many of the ideas and booked INSET days and outside speakers to help us to accelerate the learning of all our pupils.

I have read all the books by this author and find them invaluable tools for the classroom. Numerous case studies gave me a great deal of food for thought. If you are interested in Accelerated Learning and want a book to help you to get started, I recommend any of the books by Alistair Smith. You can then follow up with more specific reading such as Goleman or Gardner.

As a classroom teacher and head of a science department in a large High school I found this book to be an invaluable aid in helping me to focus the department on teaching and learning. As a department we have adopted the learning cycle wholesale and have reformatted our schemes of work around it. We find it an essential planning tool.
