4.0 out of 5 stars A good foundation for Higher Education 3 Sep 2011
Although more old-fashioned looking and less flashy than many modern resources, this book does provide a solid basis for many Foundation and Pre-Sessional courses aimed at international students wishing to study in English speaking universities.

Along with many linguistic features of effective writing such as notions of 'Cause and Effect','Structure and cohesion' and 'comparison and contrast', the book deals with the type of academic conventions that students will have to assimilate in order to produce effective work at HE level. For example, ways of using others' ideas to support your own without committing plagiarism; specifically, effective techniques to paraphrase, summarise, quote and acknowledge the academic ideas that you have read.

Whilst it 'does what it says on the tin', the slightly old-fashioned look and feel of the book is exacerbated by the lack of interesting contexts for many of the lessons that will result from the resource. It will definitely be the responsibility of the teacher to bring these materials to life; an experienced teacher might use them in conjunction with a Power point presentation or some video/audio materials to provide context and a more humanistic approach.

Despite these reservations, I believe that any teachers' resource area with pretensions to teaching EAP courses should include this book, but unlike some more modern resources it won't provide you with all of the material you need to plan and execute effective and dynamic EAP lessons.
