DVD Description

A civilian oil-rig crew confront a mysterious force that either has the power to change the world or destroy it.

Synopsis

After a nuclear submarine mysteriously sinks in a remote part of the ocean floor, a team of divers on a prototype underwater oil rig are pressed into service by the U.S. Navy in a rescue attempt. When a hurricane cuts off contact between the surface and the underwater depths, the crew begin to see evidence of a strange, possibly alien intelligence at work. While chief Bud Brigman (Ed Harris) bickers with his ex-wife and boss (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), the Navy commander begins to grow increasingly paranoid about the mysterious alien life and threatens to use a recovered nuclear weapon to destroy everything. James Cameron's undersea epic is a tale of sacrifice and hope in an amazing alien landscape that covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface. Featuring landmark visual effects but plagued by production difficulties, the cast and crew were stretched to the breaking point and THE ABYSS became one of the most expensive films ever made in its time, but the final result is a remarkable blend of action and human drama. Scenes cut from the theatrical version, including a number of special effects sequences involving huge tidal waves threatening the cities of the world, are restored in the Special Edition versions.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great movie but what's with the aspect ratio?, 20 April 2007

I recently re-bought this one as the original DVD I have is not formatted properly for widescreen tv's. I was hoping that this more recent edition has had this corrected but it has sadly not. As a result, when you are watching it on one of the more recent widescreen lcd's or plasmas, the picture is not "enhanced" for 16x9 so the picture sits like a small letterbox in the middle of the screen. You can zoom the image to fit the screen but the clarity is lost. Such a shame because its one of my favourite sci-fi movies of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spanking, 22 Aug 2006
By Zoot Horn Rollo "Ja-Me" (Suffolk, England) - See all my reviews
Sci-Fi had grown stale by the late eighties, space travel had been rubbed into the ground as concept, but nobody had been to the bottom of the Ocean. However, when an American Nuclear Submarine mysteriously goes down a small underwater oil drilling team are called in as the Navys only hope of getting below the surface before a major storm front hits the area cutting of any futher rescue attempts. Dispatched with a team of Navy Seals to guide them the divers attempt a quick rescue opperation but are instead flung into a nightmare world where they are cut off from the surface and trapped on the edge of 25,000 ft ravine. The unlucky miners are required to push themselves to the limit to save themselves, only to find that a lot more is at stake. The plot is one of those amazing peices of storytelling that pulls together some stunning effects for the time period (i mean stunning) and a real sense of immersion from the epic setpieces making a trully exceptional film on all levels. Infact epic is a word that describes this film allround and thats that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple title - complex movie, 25 Sep 2006

All the elements are there to make this a fun "sit on the edge of your seat" movie. You have a nuclear sub accident that just gets worse as it goes you have conflict between authority types and free wheelers. There is a love interest (attraction at a distance). Will he make it or is it out of time or out of air or out of distance maybe out of patients. Who knows?

Aside from the story there a re great effects and many panoramic scenes. There are lots of bubbles, an abyss and maybe some Ruskies. If you like all those submarine movies this fits in well. Again it is the people action and reaction that make the movie. Don't wait for some slam-bang surprise to appear out of no ware or you will have misses the story.

This is one of those movies that have to grow on you and then you will watch it again.
