Two of Iran's greatest musicians, tar player Mohammed Reza Lotfi and vocalist Mohammed Reza Shajarian are captured here in a live performance of 4th March 1981 in Tehran. Students had been protesting against the revolutionary hard liners attempting to force their political, ideological and religious ideas on the University, and Lotfi himself, Head of the School of Music, had been arrested in a crackdown by the authorities and held for several hours. As a result this concert began 90 minutes late.
Lotfi's strings echo almost angrily through the night air as though echoing through eternity, as Shajarian defiantly wails the poetry of Hafez, singing of love in the face of such oppression. A fabulous dialogue between two masters essential for any lover of Iranian music.
Total time 51:43. Note that, as is often the case with Iranian music, what are nominally separate tracks form a continuous piece in performance, some CD players inserting a gap between tracks may cause ugly drop-outs. Sleeve notes in English, French, German and Farsi.
