Review

This is a nice change of direction in the literature of abstract painting. When it comes to abstracts, it's the ideas behind the work that mainly count and it's difficult to come up with a strictly instructional approach because you're not simply representing a subject but interpreting it and, if you don't have something to say, there's not really any point in even getting started. However, there are various muscles you can develop and working from a set of ideas and exercises based on what other artists have done will help you get the idea of where you're supposed to be going and how you might get there. Rolina has come up with a good range of approaches such as the interplay of lines, monochrome working, even painting from photographs and to music. This latter is something that's cropped up before and is an intriguing idea - you use a favourite piece to put yourself in a specific frame of mind and then simply (well, I say, "simply") transfer that creativity to paper. As well as the projects, Rolina has some useful comments on where you might look for sources of inspiration and, in her conclusion, a list of do's and don'ts that every artist should have taped to their studio wall.-Artbookreview.net --Artbookreview.net

This is third book on Abstract Art by Rolina van Vliet. If you own the first two, you may find the third, as I did, to be somewhat repetitive in content, and illustrations. If you are a newcomer to the books, you would do better to look at the first of Ms van Vliet's worksPainting Abstracts: Ideas, Projects and Techniques, which I found truly inspirational. In all the books, her method is to inspire by suggesting various exploratory pathways to reaching a desired result.

You cannot help but like Rolina's style and artistic creativity. The way she encourages and inspires us all to see what abstract art is and to achieve it ourselves is admirable to say the least. If you do not have any of her other books, this is essential and is still of much use even if, like me, you have the collection. This book covers some of the ground in her other books, but it approaches painting from the angle of what and how shall I paint. Rolina takes varied 'themes' and turns them into paintings. There are guide lines to start you off in the right direction and images of the finished painting that will inspire you. I love the 'skies' study that is also shown on the front cover. This is not a step by step how to paint book but instead a book that will help you to think like a painter, to use your imagination and truly create unique art. Recommended. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.

Although I've been painting for many years, I wanted to find out how to go about doing abstract paintings: I wanted to know the secret ingredients of a good abstract painting. This book did answer some of my questions. It is a very attractive book, and enjoyable to look through, there are many interesting examples of abstract work. It has some very good information on the elements of painting at the beginning, also. I am still exploring the book, but so far have found several of the author's projects useful, out of the 50 in the book. I'd recommend it to those who want some help with understanding and developing their own abstract work, as well as to enhance figurative work, or who are curious to know how other people go about it. What it lacks perhaps is the ideas and thought processes which I assumed went into abstract paintings, this book doesn't touch on anything intellectual, purely the practical side of making an abstract.
