Product Description

Product Description
Absorption and Scattering of Light by Small Particles
Treating absorption and scattering in equal measure, this self–contained, interdisciplinary study examines and illustrates how small particles absorb and scatter light. The authors emphasize that any discussion of the optical behavior of small particles is inseparable from a full understanding of the optical behavior of the parent material–bulk matter. To divorce one concept from the other is to render any study on scattering theory seriously incomplete.
Special features and important topics covered in this book include:
∗ Classical theories of optical properties based on idealized models
∗ Measurements for three representative materials: magnesium oxide, aluminum, and water
∗ An extensive discussion of electromagnetic theory
∗ Numerous exact and approximate solutions to various scattering problems
∗ Examples and applications from physics, astrophysics, atmospheric physics, and biophysics
∗ Some 500 references emphasizing work done since Kerker′s 1969 work on scattering theory
∗ Computer programs for calculating scattering by spheres, coated spheres, and infinite cylinders

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of 'Absorption and Scattering of Light by Small ..', 31 Dec 2003
By D. R. Kirkby (the UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I guess anyone contemplating buying this book would have already seen a copy, as it is really aimed at those doing serious PhD level research - it is certainly not for undergraduates.

Chapters include

1) Introduction
2) EM theory (it can't replace a decent EM theory book)
3) Absorption and scattering by an arbitrary particle
4) Absorption and scattering by a sphere
5) Particles small compared to the wavelenght
6) Rayleig-Gans theory
7) Geometrical optics
8) A potpurri of particles
9) Classical theories of optical constants
10) Measured optical properties
11) Extinction
12) Surface modes in small particles
13) Angular dependance of scattering.
14) Miscellaneous applications.

It's seriously heavy unless you are good at maths. It might appeal to those studying astronomy, weather, or as I did tissue optics - human tissue scatters and absorbs light.

Given the cost, I suggest you look at a copy first, before deciding to buy it. If you need it, the book is good, but it really is only of use if you are doing PhD or similar level research in the area.

It's the sort of book a group doing research in an area can justify buying, but less so an individual who has to pay from his or her own pocket.
