Absolutely Fabulous was first broadcast in 1992 and became an instant hit. Originally a sketch on the French and Saunders Show, Jennifer Saunders saw its potential and created one of the most ground-breaking and debauched comedies on British TV. Centred around the hip London fashion scene the series follows Edina (Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley), two women who refuse to grow up and are constantly on a mission to lose weight, gorging themselves with cocaine and/or champagne, endlessly throwing parties (or throwing up at parties), and sporting outrageous outfits which were the height of fashion at the time--honestly, Sweetie. The superb comic performances offered star status to Julia Sawalha as Edina's straight-laced daughter and Jane Horrocks as the sublimely dippy Bubble, and reinvented the careers of Joanna Lumley and June Whitfield. Saunders meanwhile secured her status as one of the top female comedians Britain has ever produced. Although its consciously chic clothing looks a little dated now, its mad characterisations endure and the jokes remain as hilariously slick and apt as ever.
Ab Fab remains a landmark in TV since it was the first time that female comedians and writers had had the freedom and exposure to satirise problems close to their own heart, from their own perspective. With Feminist writers claiming that the ideals of feminism were dead in the 1990s and that female concerns were moving in the wrong direction--towards the "Laddette Culture"--and reports claiming that careers were taking a central role, forcing motherhood onto the back-burner, the series sought to embody and satirise these new supposedly "female" characteristics. As the show continued to grow in popularity both in Britain and the States, plans were made to transfer the formula to America. However, as with many other great British series, the content was considered too risqué for American audiences due to the amount of sex and drug references. Thus domestic audiences breathed a sigh of relief that their beloved Ab Fab would stay forever British to the core. --Nikki DisneySee all Product Description

I bought this whole collection from the US nearly 4 years ago, even the artwork is the same, all because The White box episode (the final) was never available in the UK, (until now).
I had all the episodes & specials, but would still recommend this complete collection to any true fan.
Although the special features are nothing new & have all been included on past dvds it is the main episodes we all know and love.
Finally available in the UK, Sit back with a glass of bolly & remember why we all fell in love with the Fabulous Edina & Patsy in the first place, Sweetie, Darling.....
(As of July 2012 - As I write this - it is a 100% complete set. There will be a 20 years 'special' released on 31st July 2012, but that is the only thing not included in this set.)
The box outer box sleeve feels really nice with slightly raised diamond crossed silver areas. Here is a quick view of what you actually get from Amazon:
Biting satire fantastically written, brilliant caracters in extremly funny situations.
Jennifer Saunders is a comic genius and Lumley as Patsy is mindblowing as is Sawalha as the clever daughter, simply Great through and through.
I don't see what the fuss is about what region this is in, almost all DVD players are multi regional these days and you can buy a decent one for less than 50 pounds.
Us customer really should fight this regional nonsense by buying whatever region and playing it in our multiregional players, until the manufactures realise it's they who are losing, then they will stop this region nonsense.
Cab them round to the DVD manufacturers and have them all sort of squished together then have them cabbed round to my house immediately.
Patsy and I are going to watch them all this weekend with a little bolly darling, then were doing some reiki healing with hot rocks or something sweetie.
How can you not get this?! Fingers crossed for a brand new series soon from Saunders and Lumley but go over all the classics before Patsy inhales your kitchen!
And for a few years, that was it. 'Ab Fab' had entered the annals of TV history as a well-remembered and well-respected slice of the best of British sitcom. But, in 2001, the show returned. But, oh dear. A once brilliant programme was reduced to childish, ridiculous, camped up humour. The jokes were laboured and the characters began to get more and more outlandish. A dreadful special, 'Gay,' followed on Christmas 2002, then a bizarre and laborious fifth series followed in 2003, which managed even to plumb series four's depths. The embarrassing 'White Box' followed on Christmas Day 2004.
I don't want this review to sound entirely negative. The first three series of 'Ab Fab' are glorious, and Joanna Lumley puts in one of the all-time best comedy performances as Patsy, whilst Jennifer Saunders' already ample comedic skills turn Edina into a character you can't help but love. There are a myriad of hilarious comedic situations, usually when Eddy and Patsy are taken completely out of their environment or their status is threatened. Julia Sawalha is a fantastic comic foil for the pair, desperately trying not to turn into her mother.Read more ›
