There are lots of Hank Williams compilations available. This one represents superb value for money. All the classic recordings are included and the sound quality is good, considering how old the material is. In terms of the songs themselves, what can you say? Virtually every one is a classic. Hank's songwriting is nothing short of brilliant and his performances are mesmeric. As we all know, his career was cut tragically short. Nevertheless, he remains one of country music's most prolific artists. There are few people who can sing with the melancholic beauty of Hank Williams. His songwriting is deceptively complex - his seemingly simple lyrics are nonetheless beautiful, poetic and heartfelt. One of the greatest songwriters ever, in any genre. Five stars is not enough.

My first Hank Williams CD but a real discovery. The 'Absolutely Essential' is a real bargain series. Short on 'sleeve notes'!

3 CD's of classic Hank is a little much to listen to in one go, but if you want to make a compilation or digitise them to MP3 for your computer jukebox, this set represents superb value for money. From the sheer joy of life expressed in Jambalaya, through the heartache and pain of I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry to the cynical realisation of I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive, it's all here with plenty more. Not a duff track on it and the sound quality is pretty good too.
Lyrically, Hank explored areas and ideas that were previously untouched and remained so for decades after his passing. His imagery, even in a fun song like Hey Good Lookin' was without peer. Keeping a date book until it's covered with age because it has his beaux name on every page for example, or from I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive, a lawyer proved I wasn't born, I was only hatched. Where the heck did that come from?. Brilliant use of language.
Tuneful, intelligent music at a bargain price. Not a duff track on it and they are arranged in roughly chronological order, so you can listen along if you are reading a biography of the great man.
Hank is under appreciated. Modern music owes the memory of this man a huge debt. Buy this, listen to it and fall in love with pure, unadulterated genius.
