I missed this lot first time around - maybe it was the suits and the hair made me think they were a typical 80's act of packaging without substance. I admit I was wrong: there are too many good ideas on these tracks to allow them to be forgotten, unlike many of their contemporaries. Yes it was - and is - pop music, but the good stuff still sounds good whatever decade it was made. Great production - mostly by Trevor Horn, with Fry and White themselves taking over later - sharp lyrics with some forgiveable self-reverential indulgence, and vocals that sound like they meant it. A short but impressive creative peak before they burned themselves out and, by some accounts, their egos really did get in the way. They couldn't make the souffle rise a second time when they re-formed some years later but let's be grateful for these efforts. The last four tracks (of seventeen) are re-mixes which neither add nor detract from the originals.

Although ABC have never been the most prolific band around they released some of the best pop records of the eighties and were one of the highlights of the new romantic movement that spanned from the beginning to the mid eighties. ABC were never a prolific band and their releases were few and far between but when they did release any material these songs became instant classics. Their songs are typically upbeat pop tracks and are very danceable and despite the fact that a lot of the new romantic bands released classic ballads there are very few ballads on this album. "Absolutely ABC" is a collection of their greatest hits and is simply brilliant and highlights some of the greatest pop moments of the eighties. The highlights on this great album include the dance classics "Poison Arrow", "The Night You Murdered Love", "The Look Of Love" and "One Better World". Overall it's a great album and is a must for any collection.

This was the first ABC 'Best of' to emerge on the market, representing the very best of the material produced during the first and most successful stage of their career. The collection is absolutely superb. The songs are polished (some utterly sublime) well produced and have dated so very well. Other compilations have emerged with a bigger selection of tracks, but with copies of this great album selling for less than a pound, this is as good a place as any to start your ABC collection.
