This 1989 album was k.d. lang's generous farewell to the country music world that had given her the cold shoulder after her stellar collaboration with legendary producer Owen Bradley on Shadowland. Songs such as "Pulling Back the Reins"--written by lang with co-producer guitarist Ben Mink--combined classic country and western imagery with more revealingly personal emotions. At the same time, the album maintained a sly sense of humour missing from much of her later work. The covers of Willie Nelson ("Three Days") and Wynn Stewart ("Big Big Love") certainly don't hurt. The Reclines, lang's band, is notable for the presence of Greg Leisz on steel guitar. --Rick Mitchell

Format:Audio CD
What a great album! Lang obviously knows and appreciates the country-music tradition, but at the same time she doesn't take it too seriously. She has a lot of fun with tunes like "Big Boned Gal" that are both country and poking fun of country at the same time. She has an incredible voice and a great band backing her up. If you are a fan of great singing, make this your first country album!

For someone who started with kd lang's not-country stuff, this was quite a step backwards on the sliding scale of her albums. However, despite not really listening to country music before I could certainly be tempted now.
Ironic lyrics, fantastic arrangements and THAt voice all contribute to something which turns out more than the sum of its parts. The Ben Mink/lang songs are undoubtedly the best (as always), but what a shame the lyrics weren't printed inside the sleeve notes for the three tracks they didn't write!
If you like lang's later stuff, don't be afraid to return to her roots..it's well worth it.

Bought to replace some old vinyl and I'd forgotten how great this album is - kd's voice is superb and the songs great. I prefer the country 'kd' to the smoky nightclub 'kd' anyday.... although nightclub kd is pretty good too!
