I now own all of Mary Westmacotts (pseudonym of Agatha Christie) books there being 6 in total which you can purchase as two books from Amazon. All of Agatha Christies . I loved Absent in the Spring it shows you about relationships between the the mother/wife and her family. The mother (a terrible snob) is stranded in India at a train station in the middle of no where whilst travelling home from seeing her sick daughter (truth was her daughter had tried to kill herself due to having a love affair). She has loads of time on her hands and starts to reflect on her life past and present and has to face what the truth of her life is. Now when the train pulls into the station she has two roads to choose. Does she choose the old life which is what she knows and feels safe to her even though it is a sham or does she take the unknown path which would make her a better mother and wife maybe..... read and find out!!

I have bought and read both the red and the black Mary Westmacott Omnibus. Both have three strong stories, entertaining and full of indepth characters. Most real page turners. I just wish Agatha Christie as Mary Westmacott had written / published more than these 6 stories.

Another perspective from Agatha Christie. 6 Mar 2003
By PMcD - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Fans of Agatha Christie's mystery novels will not be disappointed in these more standard novels, which she published under the name Mary Westmacott. "Absent in the Spring" is a magnificent novel, the story of a woman unexpectedly stranded in a desert outpost with no distractions, who is forced for the first time to see herself and others objectively. A simple concept, but difficult to write. Christie handles the matter superbly, and in her autobiography, lists this as one of her favorite novels. "Absent in the Spring" is even more interesting when you consider she wrote the book in 3 days during the London Blitz!

Most of the novels Christie wrote as Mary Westmacott are semi-autobiographical, or reveal conflicts or persons present in her own life. Christie fans will want to include this collection of novels for insight into the author's life, thought processes, and internal emotional struggles. The other novels in this collection, especially "Giant's Bread", are also excellent novels, but the collection would be worth reading just for "Absent in the Spring."

These novels are wonderful! In my opinion, "Giant's Bread" is her masterpiece!

If you enjoyed The Shell Seekers, you might enjoy Agatha Christie writing as Mary Westmacott. I admire the crafting and timelessness of 'Absent in the Spring', but I found the sense of futility too sad to want to read again.
