Product Description

This is the first and only English-language guide to Abruzzo, a region that lies just an hour's drive from Rome, yet has never been discovered by mass tourism. Written by an author born and bred in the region, it explores Abruzzo's three national parks, where skiing, hiking and wildlife-watching opportunities abound. It takes visitors to Abruzzo's beaches, which have been voted some of the best in Europe. It tours ancient hilltop towns, Neolithic caves and Roman ruins, and offers detailed practical information including transport and accommodation options for all budgets.

...comprehensive English language general tourist guide book to the Abruzzo. Long overdue in my opinion and will hopefully set the standard for more guides to this wonderful and unspoiled area of Italy. The Abruzzo has something for everyone - fantastic mountains and winter sports, stunning beaches and more beautiful little towns and villages than you would have the opportunity to visit in a lifetime. This book is both a helpful general guide and gives more specific information on what to do and where to go. My only criticism would be that it is a little Pescara-centric (the author's family come from this city so it is one that he knows intimately) and not enough info on the sublime SULMONA! There is a picture of the 'Madonna che Scappa' (Madonna who runs / escapes- a spectacle which draws crowds to the Piazza Garibaldi every Easter Sunday) but no text and nothing about the Giostra ( a type of jousting Palio between the rival quarters of the city) which takes place every July / August. If you like Italy then you will LOVE the Abruzzo and be sure to make a special visit to Sulmona.

This book came just in time for our 1-week trip to Abruzzo and it was an enormous help. The writer clearly knows Abruzzo back to front and inside out: the guide is packed with the kinds of detail that would be known only to a local. The first section of the guide - culture, people, language etc- made very interesting pre-reading before our trip. The guide itself was very useful both for accommodation/eating etc and for sightseeing. Overall, certainly one of the better travel guides that we have used and a must for those going to this wonderful region.

A bit of everything 22 Aug 2011

The book gives information about all aspects of a holiday in Abruzzo. Because Abruzzo offers a lot of different things it is therefore not necessarily very detailed on each aspect (I was for example looking for more precise descriptions of hiking tours) but is definitely good as an 'allrounder'. A plus point is that it's written by someone who grew up in Abruzzo but is at the same time sensible to traveller's needs. I would definitely recommend the book.
