Santana's 1970 follow-up to their Woodstock-propelled smash debut found leader Carlos Santana further expanding his San Francisco group's already broad musical boundaries. To wit: two hit singles that emanate from opposite ends of the spectrum--"Black Magic Woman", originally written and recorded by English blues-rock guitarist Peter Green and Fleetwood Mac, and New York Latin percussionist/dance music king Tito Puente's infectious "Oye Como Va". Tying blues, rock, and salsa together in one pan-cultural package, Abraxas also featured such standout tracks as "Gypsy Queen", "Singing Winds" and "Crying Beasts", of which the latter two underscored the growing Eastern sensibilities of guitarist Santana. --Billy Altman

What can you say about something that touches you when you listen to it? From the beginning to the end this album reaches the depths of the spirit. The guitar playing is superb, not only technically but also the feel ... why don't they make music this good today?

This music makes you dance on a hot summer's eveing. The words are pointless without the guitar, the guitar makes no sense without the drums, the drums move the words to the beat of ...just listen! This album is an incident.

Not everyone likes these digipack versions of albums but I think they're great. Not much to say about the music that hasn't already been said. One of an elite bunch of recordings that truly deserves to be called "classic". Not just Santana's best, but one of the best truly original albums ever.

practically the entire cd is more than very good
get the one with the three (live) bonus tracks, since they add very very good music to the normal edition which itself is superb.

have no doubt, you will thank me on listening
