Book Description

Abram Games (1914-96) was one of the 20th century's most innovative and important graphic designers. His remarkable career spanned 60 years, during which time he was responsible for some of the most enduring images ever produced in Britain. Games produced hundreds of posters as well as stamps, book jackets and emblems, including those for the Festival of Britain (1951) and BBC Television (1953). Other clients included British Airways, the Financial Times, Guinness, Shell and Transport for London. During World War II he was appointed Official War Poster Designer and designed 100 posters. His personal philosophy of "maximum meaning, minimum means" gave all his works a distinctive conceptual and visual quality. This book, accompanying a major exhibition at the Design Museum, features 180 colour illustrations of his best-known work as well as many examples of unpublished designs from his own extensive archive.

3.0 out of 5 stars "Nice" book 13 Mar 2009
By Ladyj
Format:Hardcover
This is a lovely, well produced book. I would have liked to see it in a bigger format. Some of the images are frustratingly small. I would also have liked to see more writing. I wanted more information about Games' technique and some deeper explorations of the contexts for the production of the works. I wanted a bigger, deeper book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Abram Games Britains most famous designer 24 Feb 2004
Format:Hardcover
I met Abram Games in 1990 when he gave a lecture to Newport College of Art and exhibited his work at South Glamorgan Institute. I bought every postcard and spent the next 10 years trying to get more information and imagery for use in teaching design history. I only manged to get about 20 reasonable images. This wonderful book is crammed full of some of the best designs of the second half of the 20th century. Games is one of the most original and creative designers in the world. I rate him with Cassandre and Glaser as one of the all time greats. This book is a must for anyone interested in design and advertising.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 'must have' for design students. 9 Nov 2006
By PH
Format:Hardcover
Anyone who is interested in, or works in, the field of visual communication should own this book. Abram Games was a true genius whose work and working methodologies are as relevant to contemporary designers and design students as they were during his working life. Games' solutions to design/communication problems display a breathtaking clarity that many designers working today would benefit from studying. The best purchase any student of design will ever make.
