5.0 out of 5 stars Abracadabra Violin 26 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
My daughter has just taken up the violin at school and finds it hard to read music and none of the rest of the household are musical so I bought this book to help her, and it has.
It's step by step guide is very simple to follow and the accompying C.D makes it fun to learn by ear as she can hear what she's playing should sound like.
I highly reccommend it to anyone taking up a musical instrument for the first time as it stops the fustration of learning and practice and actually makes learning to play fun which is exactly what it should be and is with this book great fun. I have even started to learn to play along with my daughter and we teach each other now with the help of this easy to follow book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner book 27 Aug 2005
By Rain
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
For the self-taught adult, this is a great way to start. The CD helps to hear what the music should sound like, and to consolidate understanding of rhythm, and the progression is unhurried and steady with lots of pieces to consolidate base skills like steady long bows, and moving between strings. Great for developing basic technique and music reading skills. The book does lose it slightly at the end where the top string is introduced- the step into the high notes, one of the most complex parts for the beginner to get right and to make sound good is rushed and the pieces are get very complex without warning - the ragtime piece is a bad choice in particular - and a beginner will need a lot of additional help when reaching this point of progression, with much simpler pieces to practice on. However up to this point a very sound book to learn from.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners 27 Dec 2007
Format:Paperback
I'm a teenager teaching myself to play violin and out of all the books I've tried, this is the best I've found. It gives you help with fingering and bowing, giving you lots of practice for both sides of playing violin. It also gives you 'teacher's parts' so a more experienced violinist can play with you on the songs - these also come in handy later on as you can learn play them yourself! The CD is also handy for the learner to listen to a song before or whilst they play - it's good to know how something is meant to sound - not to mention, the first track is the piano key for 'A' which can help with tuning by ear if you do not own a piano, pitch pipes or tuning fork. Certainly an excellent beginners book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really great beginners book 22 Dec 2006
Format:Paperback
As an adult returning to the violin after many years, this book as a great reminder and excellent practice to get back into playing and reading music.

It is quite slow and very basic for adults but really good as a starting point!

For the self-taught violinist, this is a great way to start. The CD helps to hear what the music should sound like, and to aid understanding of rhythm, and the progression is unhurried and steady with lots of pieces to consolidate base skills like steady long bows, and moving between strings. Great for developing both basic technique and music reading skills, and confidence building, particularly in the ability to play plenty of tunes in rounds with the CD accompaniment. The book does lose it slightly at the end where the top string is introduced- the step into the high notes, one of the most complex parts for the beginner to get right and to make sound good, is rushed and the last few pieces get very complex without warning. The ragtime piece was a bad choice in particular. A beginner will need a lot of additional help when reaching this stage of development, with much simpler pieces to practice and consolidate the skills involved. However up to this point a very sound book to learn from.

4.0 out of 5 stars Abracadabra Violin: Bk. 1
An ideal tutor for new, young sting players.
The book's layout is proving to be stimulating and fun for 'my' 6-11 year olds who (e.g.) look for the new items of theory. Read more
