For the self-taught violinist, this is a great way to start. The CD helps to hear what the music should sound like, and to aid understanding of rhythm, and the progression is unhurried and steady with lots of pieces to consolidate base skills like steady long bows, and moving between strings. Great for developing both basic technique and music reading skills, and confidence building, particularly in the ability to play plenty of tunes in rounds with the CD accompaniment. The book does lose it slightly at the end where the top string is introduced- the step into the high notes, one of the most complex parts for the beginner to get right and to make sound good, is rushed and the last few pieces get very complex without warning. The ragtime piece was a bad choice in particular. A beginner will need a lot of additional help when reaching this stage of development, with much simpler pieces to practice and consolidate the skills involved. However up to this point a very sound book to learn from.
