Biography

Insomnium biography 2009 .... Over the last decade Insomnium has slowly but surely made itself a household name among the melodic deathsters. Formed in 1997 in a somnolent town of Joensuu, in eastern Finland, these stern men have ever since redefined the boundaries of the genre. Two highly acclaimed demos already set the standard and in 2001 the band signed to UK label Candlelight Records. ... Read more in Amazon's Insomnium Store

First off, I cannot recommend this record highly enough. Insomnium have earned a well deserved reputation of a band capable of consistently releasing top quality material, and of their full length albums to date this is my favourite and undoubtedly the most accomplished. Everything just fits into place perfectly, the flawless production allows every instrument room to shine through lending a deep, rich tone to the band's sound. Niilo Sevänen's vocals are a particular highlight, deep, harsh yet articulate and understandable adding to the brooding, reflective nature of the music. Another point worth mentioning are the lyrics, particularly in 'At the Gates of Sleep' and 'In the Groves of Death'. The themes primarily revolve around sorrow, loss, and darkness - the lyrics themselves are relative poetry in the world of metal. Moreover, they fit the music perfectly and being discernable, make you think about the lyrical content, evoking emotion and drawing you furtehr into the music's atmosphere.

The stand-out track on this album - not to say the others are anything short of brilliant - is 'In the Groves of Death'. I often have a problem with songs which run into double figures, finding that there simply is not enough musical content and progression to warrant such a long track, however this is the only one which holds my attention from beginning to end. Soaring lead guitar lines and sombre riffs interspersed with quiet acoustic atmospheric passages, and a song structure which refuses to let you zone out even for a few seconds.

All in all, it is rare to find an album as original and complete as this one is let alone a band with a discography as impressive. Any fan of melodic death/doom metal should buy this album, immediately. You will not be disappointed.

From their debut album this band have always held true to their scandinavian roots. Mind blowing melodies that cross traditional folk with contemporary metal in a way that illuminates the mind. I'm not a death metal fan, but since I heard 'Medeia' on their first album 'In The Halls of Awaiting' I have been a firm fan of their music. It's real music. Buy this (and their other albums), and you will not be disappointed. Rock the [...] on.

For those who love true music with depth and emotion.

before i got this the only song i had heard was 'mortal shore' which is a fantastic fast paced song with great vocal performance by niilo sevanen, all the other songs are also amazing, 'the gale' is the best introduction you could wish for and 'at the gates of sleep' is fantastic, highly recommended, its amazing, one of the successful albums of 2006, 5 star magnificence

This is genuinely stunning, an album that could rank as one of the greatest metal albums of all time. Every song has such a high standard, Insomnium have found the perfect balance melody and ferocity.
