Harlem, New York. High-school basketball star Kyle (Duane Martin) is being scouted by representatives from some top college teams. He is eager to impress and hopes that college basketball will be his ticket to the NBA. But he is also seduced by the glamour of local drug dealer Birdie (Tupac Shakur) and begins playing on Birdie's side in the neighbourhood game. Former basketball star Shep (Leon) tries to persuade Kyle to focus his attention on his education, but the future of the young hopeful continues to sway in the balance.

These are 2 quality films, both with powerful performances from the late Tupac. Out of the two "Above The Rim" is my favourite, which also stars Marlon Wayans, who was one of the stars of "Scary Movie", and although his character plays a more serious role in the film, he still plays a good part.
The second, "Gang Related", isn't quite as good as other Tupac films, such as "Above The Rim", "Gridlock'd", but the suprising combination of Tupac and James Belushi works quite well and I would recommend this too anyone, even if they weren't a Tupac fan.

"Above the Rim" is an entertaining street drama that focuses around Kyle Lee Watson, an inner-city high school basketball player who shows a lot of promise but lets his own arrogance get the best of him. He won't listen to anybody who offers him advice on how to improve his game, as he thinks that he is the best player ever. He's been hoping that his mad skills are catching a college scout's attention, but he does catch Birdie's eyes when he plays. Birdie is a well known gang leader who offers Kyle the good life so long as he plays on his neighborhood team in a "Shoot-Out" basketball contest that means the world to him. Kyle--being impatient as ever--agrees to join, not seeing the clear danger that is in front of him. A high school security guard with a past knows the danger that Birdie presents, and he is the only who has a chance to get through to Kyle before it is too late.
Not only is this a very good basketball movie, but it is also an intense and character-driven drama centered around the choices that we make in life... and how we have to live with them in the long run. The film has some great performances from Duane Martin, Marlon Wayans and the late Tupac Shakur. Even though everybody is great in their roles, the showstopper is indeed Shakur. He gives a very masterful performance that really sticks out and will stay with you long after the movie is over. My only complaint is the length of the movie. It's true that a movie that runs a little over an hour and a half isn't short, but I think the story and the characters open more possibilities to add on to the movie. I think more opportunities and risks could have been taken to further enrich the story. Still, it is a really good movie that didn't disappoint me.
I really enjoyed "Above the Rim.

I'm a huge fan of Tupac and this was the first movie I'd seen with him in it. 'Above The Rim' gives you a real look into the powerful reality of life on the streets, as Tupac plays a local gangsta trying to recruit new players for the upcoming basketball tournament- you get driven into a web of lies, deceit, trust and love. This film is a must see for anybody from whom is only the slightest bit involved within the urban community to political urban speakers.
The plot is mainly based around Kyle, an upcoming basketball star who is caught up in the gangsta lifestyle with Birdie( played by Tupac Shakur), it is a real insight into the gangsta life- money, women, drugs, guns but more importantly trust, loyalty, love and responsibility. You have to watch this film.

A very good film and the action is excellent. Tupac is Tupac, and is excellent. Duane Martin is an excellent player and Marlon Wayans is also good. An essential video for any basketball fan. Soundtrack goes well with the film...

This film shows the struggle of a talented kid in a poor community between the seductive lifestyle of drugs, women and fast quick buck$, and the perhaps slower life of college, family and doing whats right.
Tupac has good performance as the villain drug-dealer while Duane Martins is excellent as the aspiring young basketball star.
Perhaps the Soundtrack is more concentrated on than the story line, but this doesn't disappoint and the film comes to a great climax, aided by the music.
