I don't know what they put in the water in Grand Rapids, Michigan, but Billy Bang and his band that night were on fire. This is advanced jazz with swing and heart, a kind of avant-groove. The pianist, bass player and drummer are unknown to me - presumably local players - but they play with great commitment and the piano sections are excellent, spiky contributions to the mix. Frank Lowe, something of a legend in 'new thing' jazz, was a disciple of Coltrane and Ayler without being a prisoner of either style, and this was reputedly his very last gig: he had lung cancer, and died a couple of months later. He plays with great delicacy here. Bang is having a thoroughly good time weaving out long melodic bluesy lines with his usual compelling rough magic. The music positively barrels along and is truly uplifting. This is a real find.
