Amazon.co.uk Review

For better or worse, David Mamet's hit play Sexual Perversity in Chicago is watered down into this romantic comedy about a couple (played by Rob Lowe and Demi Moore) who get together and then fall apart due to Lowe's character's inability to commit. Jim Belushi is on hand as the gratuitously swinish best friend who looks at women as meat, and Elizabeth Perkins is entertainingly arch as Moore's gal pal and Belushi's nemesis. There is nothing about this 1986 film by Edward Zwick (co-creator of TV's thirtysomething and director of Glory and Courage Under Fire) that is at all reminiscent of Mamet, but that doesn't make it bad or dull. While one can feel the script straining to fill in gaps where chunks of the original play have disappeared, Zwick often successfully tells the story without words at all, relying on the actors to convey pure emotion. Lowe is good, and the then-willowy Moore's understated performance reminds one of the actress she might have been before she became a spectacle. --Tom Keogh

'About last night . . . ' is a mix of sport, love and friendship; a combination which, obviously, leads to complication. Pretty boy Danny (Rob Lowe) and looker Debbie (Demi Moore) have a brief meeting in a Chicago hangout which leads to a deply passionate night which both are willing to forget. But neither can forget or resist the magnetic attraction between them. This unlikely relationship develops and Debbie moves in with Dan leaving her faithful flatmate stranded. Can the strength of their love adapt these free spirits to coupledom? Or will the pressure of feelings and friends prove too much? Superb acting from Lowe and Moore changes 'About last night . . .' from an amusing film with a passable plot to an unforgettable movie which should not be missed. So return to the jazzy 80s; fluffy hair, bold patterns, all night parties and . . . 'About last night . . .'

Oh alright, there's no such thing as too much nudity when you're talking about Demi; but the 18 certificate and the huge raunch-count of this movie do get in the way a little bit. They distract from the fact that this is a clever, well-written film which makes an an interesting study of not just the relationship between Moore and Lowe, but also the relationships between Lowe and Belushi and Moore and Perkins. There's plenty of enjoyable dialogue, and genuinely funny scenes, plus convincing performances from all four principals. It's not all comedy though: About Last Night gets pretty dark and depressing in places too. Can't say as I've ever seen another film quite like it. Definitely one to watch, but possibly after the kids are in bed...

Now, its hard for me to be objective about this film. I discovered it at uni in 1989, and fell in love with both it, and Demi Moore. It is what we now call 'bittersweet', and although directly inspired by David Mamets play, the characters are a whole lot likeable (although both best friends are very selfish). The film has dated a little, but not much, and the themes in the film, of commitment, friendship, relationships, and the complications of just living your life, are universal.

I can't talk about this film without smiling, and that should tell you all you need to know.....
