Product Description

Product Description

In About Kane, Graham Saunders offers an important study of one of the most controversial and talented playwrights of recent times. His survey includes a concise biography, in-depth analysis of Sarah Kane's work, and interviews with Kane and those who helped to put her work on stage. With Kane's reputation still growing, this book is an essential guide for the student and theatregoer.

'The strong point of the books in this series is the distinctive voices of the writers, their attitudes and how these are reflected in their plays. Smart chronologies and brief annotated bibliographies give the books a student-friendly feel, and all are readable and jargon free.' Aleks Sierz, Times Higher Education Supplement

The real stregth of this book is undoubtedly the way that it collects together all of Kane's own interviews, which are otherwise very hard to get hold of separately, as many are buried in obscure journals and magazines. The book also adds a generous number of valuable interviews by those who worked with her.

These aspects alone makes this book a very valuable resource for both undergraduate students writing essays on Sarah Kane, theatre goers interested in her plays and academic researchers planning to write about her.

In addition, there is a very useful overview of Kane's career written with hindsight which complements the discussion of the plays already available in Saunders' earlier monograph Love More of Kill Me Sarah Kane and the Theatre of Extremes. Strongly recommended.

Graham Saunders's new book on Sarah Kane is a valuable sourcebook for anyone interested in Kane's short life and her work as a playwright. Its accessible and straightforward style makes it a very interesting book for undergraduate and postgraduate students especially.

As well as providing a clear and incisive introduction to each play, the volume also comprises a number of new and interesting interviews which have so far not been published elsewhere. What makes this book special is how both the source material and interviews have been arranged thematically in order to allow Kane's own voice to emerge between the lines.

Overall, this is highly recommended for anyone wanting to get a quick overview on one of the most controversial playwrights of the last two decades.

Nice selection of material 16 Feb 2011
By M. Roberts - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a very good resource for readers of Sarah Kane's plays because it helps to not only familiarize readers about some of the inter-textual references in Kane's plays, but also shows how smart Kane was as a playwright. The text contains nearly 70 pages of interview material with Kane, which proves to be the real gem of the text. Readers of this book will have a new found appreciation for Kane's plays since many of the literary references and dramaturgical innovations of Kane's plays are underscored throughout the text. The book also contains interviews with theatre artists who worked with Kane, as well as others close to her work and who were involved in the production of the plays. All in all, I appreciate this text more than the earlier book on Kane by Saunders, _Love me or kill me: Sarah Kane and the theatre of extremes_.
