In October 1996, one hundred and thirty nine girls were abducted from St Mary's College, in northern Uganda. In an act of extraordinary courage, Sister Rachele, the Italian deputy headmistress, followed the abductors. Her journey took her to the Lord's Resistance Army, led by Joseph Kony, where she managed to secure the release of the majority of the girls. What happened to the remaining thirty girls and thousands of other children who have disappeared from their homes and schools in northern Uganda since the arrival of the Lord's Resistance Army? In this book journalist Els De Temmerman reconstructs the journey of two Aboke girls who managed to excape and one of the abductors, a fourteen year old boy who was part of Kony's elite troops.

This book is based on the first hand accounts of a nun, government officials and abducted girls ranging in age from 9-13. The girls were abducted from their dorm room in the middle of the night and forced to become soldiers and the concubines of male commanders in the Ugandan rebel group, Lords Resistance Army, which has been waging a war on Uganda and anyone perceived to support the government since 1986.
It begins approximately at the point of the abduction and goes through the several years of Sister Rachel's tireless and courageous journey to have the children returned to their families. Sister Rachel's efforts brought the Aboke girls into the international spotlight and highlighted the plight of children abducted and forced to give up their childhood for a cause they know little to nothing about.
While the book lacks a bit substantively, the story is quite compelling and is certainly worth reading for anyone who is interested in the complexities of the issue of child soldiers.
Dutch journalist Els De Temmerman's book is a harrowing true story that follows the plight of African children caught up in an adults' war and irrationally transformed into killing machines as their only chance of survival. The reader is introduced to the scene through the eyes of an equally daring and perhaps even irrational catholic school nun who goes after the rebels that abduct the girls under her care with nothing but her rosary and a forlorn hope in humanity. A psychotic rebel leader and his army of brainwashed child fighters who occasionally act as pawns in a dangerous 'game of chess' between two African states and all the global politics associated with it soon come onto stage as the power brokers in this 'deal' for the children's lives. The book is also not short on its portrayal of the resilience of the human spirit, even in extreme captivity. Aboke Girls provides an invaluabe insight into the lives of child soldiers in Africa - damned for what they are and damned for what they are not. The fact that it is an account of a true story only a little over 10 years old now, will remind the reader that this is a very apparent social evil that could still be spreading its apocalyptic tentacles over the lives of innocent children living in communities in the remote jungles of the Central African Republic and eastern Congo where the same notorius rebel group is now holed up. Perhaps it can be a desperately needed catalyst for sanctioning global action against groups that perpetrate child violence.

5.0 out of 5 starsthis book brings tears to your eyes27 Feb 2003

Despite the writing style seduces you to finish this book the same day you have started it, the topic of it is so heart breaking and shocking, you just need to put it away and give yourself the time to reflect on what it is all about, to get your courage together, and proceed again. This book is written by a great brave lady I happened to meet on one of her book presentations. It handles about the child soldiers in Uganda and the bravery of an Italian nun who risked her life to get them out of the hand of the rebellions in the North. Els has quit her job and focused on the writing of her experiences and on the project of helping the ex-kids soldiers back to a normal life. Because of her activities the warlord has recently, 2002, has put a price on her head. This however doesn't keep her from going again to Uganda. The profits of this book goes to her education project. If you want information out of first hand, then you should buy and read this book!

5.0 out of 5 starsAbsolutely rivetting - a MUST read for anyone interested in the Northern Ugandan crisis30 Jun 2005
By Christina Jordan Haitsma - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The abduction of over 40 girls from the Catholic School at Aboke, and the nun who followed the rebels on foot to get them back is an amazingly heartwrenching and well told tale.
Els De Temmerman also offers fascinating insights into the twisted mind of rebel leader Joseph Kony, and his spiritual quest to purify the Acholi race. If at all you are interested in the Northern Ugandan crisis, then this is an absolute must read.

Everyone should read this book to be more educated on how to act as advocates on behalf of children around the world, especially in Uganda. While the story is heartbreaking, it's necessary for us to know the world we live in. Thank you to the author for her excellent work in getting the story of these children out.
