Product Description

Product Description

Kring, Davison, Neale, and Johnson′s Abnormal Psychology sets the standard for clarity, cutting–edge coverage, authoritative content, and clinical emphasis. The authors invite students to examine the many different facets of psychopathology –– to search for clues, follow–up on hunches, and evaluate evidence on the origins of these disorders and the effectiveness of specific interventions.

Now in their new 10th Edition, the authors have also greatly expanded the text′s pedagogical features, making it even more student–friendly, engaging, and informative.

"Current trends in the field are well reflected with the sections on genetics, neuroscience, and cognitive science." – Jack Nitschke,University of Wisconsin

"I was particularly impressed by the skill with which the authors were able to discuss complex material in a clear fashion." – Janice Kiecolt–Glaser, Ohio State University

I'm surprised that no one has reviewed this outstanding text. I've had this book before I started my university course studying Mental Health Nursing over 18 months ago.
Although probably aimed at Clinical Psychology students, it is still a valuable or more to me an invaluable tool in researching for assigments.
The book assumes the reader has no previous knowledge of mental illness.
And from the first chapter it takes you on a journey into the wonderful world of caring for those who suffer from mental illness.
It describes the history of mental healthcare in Europe and America from the horrible and terrible conditions and punishments that were inflicted on sufferers and how through reformers and public pressure things have drastically improved.
The book introduces all the major mental illnesses from mood disorders e.g. anxiety and depression.
Disabling conditions e.g. Schizophrenia,Bi-polar disorder to the controversial diagnosis of Personality disorders.
Also it has a section on substance misuse. One of quirky things of the book it occasionally has peppered throughout the book pictures of celebrities mainly Americans who are sufferers. Something about the American psyche? Or brave people who wish to highlight their particular disease? You decide.
The book credits the discoverers of these illnesses and highlights treatments available from medication, psychotherapy and breaking research from the Human Genome project which has identifed certain chromosomes involved in mental illnesses.
The book has some superb research inside the covers, a fantastic reference and bibliography section and also inside the covers a overview of the DSM-IV the bible of Psychiatrists throughout the world.
If that wasn't enough there is also a card inside the front page that allows the reader to get updates through the internet.
Value for money guaranteed. This is essential reading or reference for anyone studying mental health no matter what field of work.
Again our American colleagues lead where we only follow.

Interesting and informative 7 April 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This was one of the few college textbooks that I actually enjoyed reading. I found the information to be very helpful for my tests as well as in the outside world. It is written in an easy to read format which helps one to grasp the more difficult concepts. The case studies that are included in each chapter help in understanding the disorders as well as help the reader know what people experience with these disorders. I would reccomend this book to anyone (even non college students) who want to know more about abnormal psychology.

A Better-Than-Average Textbook 12 Feb 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I wouldn't normally rate this textbook, but I was very surprised at one reviewer's very negative review of the text (see below me), and thought I should clarify a few points. First of all, I am not sure why any grad course would use this text, as it is clearly intended as an introductory text for undergraduates. (I used it for a 3rd year course). I can't imagine a grad student finding this text interesting (it's way too basic), but I think most 3rd year students-- even those with a good background in psychology-- would find this text interesting and informative. Secondly, I didn't find the layout of the text at all "schizophrenic" (whatever he/she means by that...). Each chapter begins with an overview of the disorders to be studied, followed by 1. information on specific disorders 2. information on the putative etiologies for these disorders, and 3. information on treatment strategies for these disorders. As a result, the "psychodynamic" explanations behind depression might be discussed at one point (along with biological explanations, etc.), and later in the same chapter psychodynamic treatments for depression will be discussed (along with biological treatments, etc.). I didn't find this confusing, and I certainly didn't find it needlessly repetitious. One thing that I especially liked is the way in which the authors incorporate case studies into the chapters, the detailed references to important and influential psychological studies, and the up-to-date studies that are cited. Unlike many abnormal psych books I've looked at, this one really focuses on research, and the result is that it is much easier to understand what the true issues are. I also found the book refreshingly free from the condescension that is often prominent in undergrad textbooks. The one "caveat", if any, is that is is very clear that the authors of the text adhere to a CBT paradigm of psychological illness, so it is wise to be aware of this bias beforehand. (Although I think they generally avoid being particularly biased in their discussions...).

Easy to read & understand. Full of information, and easy to navigate. I had to buy this for an abnormal psych class, and honestly am glad that it wasnt one of those dry boring texts!
