ASI BeAnywhere

ASI BeAnywhere - Remotely access up to 3 Windows-based PC's from anywhere with one simple and secure USB device.

Product Overview

In today's increasingly mobile world, we all need a fast easy and completely secure way to get access to our computers from a remote location. For example, how many times have you needed to check for that urgent email or get hold of that important file, but you're away from your PC?

Delivered on USB memory drive, ASI BeAnywhere provides the answer, letting you view and control up to three computers exactly as if you were sitting in front of them, with access to all your applications, files, emails, documents, presentations, photos, spreadsheets and more from anywhere in the world. All you need is an ASI BeAnywhere USB device and a Windows-based PC with an Internet connection. And if you've got a Notebook with a mobile broadband connection... you'll have remote access from quite literally be almost anywhere!

EASY INSTALL: Access up to three PCs
Use your ASI BeAnywhere Drive to make up to three Windows-based Internet-connected PCs remotely accessible. Simply insert the ASI BeAnywhere drive into a PC you want to be able to access remotely, follow the simple “Install” on-screen instructions and that PC will be ready to be remotely accessed in less than one minute. With ASI BeAnywhere’s Universal Networking and Zero Configuration technology, it’s literally that easy – no technical expertise is needed. Now just leave that PC on and connected to the Internet, and take your ASI BeAnywhere Drive with you.

EASY REMOTE ACCESS: In mere secondsIf you want to get remote access to your PCs from anywhere, just find a Windows-based PC that has an Internet connection and insert your ASI BeAnywhere Drive into a free USB port. ASI BeAnywhere will start automatically. Now simply choose which of your three PCs you want to access, click “Connect” and it’s as if you’re sitting in front of that remote computer - even if it's halfway around the world.

EASY SECURITY: Encrypted and leaves no trace
Worried about security? No need. Unlike other solutions, ASI BeAnywhere doesn't use a potentially insecure web browser to give you access to your remote PCs. Instead it uses its own program which runs directly from the USB drive - it doesn't install anything on the PC you're using for remote access and so leaves no traces behind. So once you've finished, simply log off, remove your ASI BeAnywhere drive and it's as ifn you were never there. What's more for extra security, ASI BeAnywhere features two independent levels of password protection, plus all communications are digitally signed and encrypted, so you can be completely sure of your security.

EASY AFFORDABILITY: Far more cost-effective than other solutions
Best of all, ASI BeAnywhere is incredibly affordable. It's quite literally less than a quarter of the price of other comparable remote access solutions and yet gives you all the same functionality and more.

ASI BeAnywhere - 12 months' easy and secure remote access to up to three PCs.

NEW- now also Windows 7 compatible.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
[ Do not buy without checking out the alternatives first! ]

I'm afraid I'm going to go against the grain of the other reviews here, but that is simply because I have a lot of experience of the alternatives to this package - experience going back about 12 years (starting with Symantec pcAnywhere back in 1998 - an old package, with a very similar name, that's still going strong!).

I understand that this kind of software and what it enables you to do will seem revolutionary to many, but please READ ON as it's not new and there are other (better, free) packages than BeAnywhere. If you can't be bothered to read the whole thing, at least READ THE SUMMARY AT THE END of this review.

This kind of software is very useful. Being able to access and control another computer has many, many uses from support to simple convenience. However the one thing it has to be is reliable - if you need to access a computer remotely the chances are that is because you can't physically get to the machine easily to put things right if the remote software dies on you.

# Reliability Issues

Let's get the simple issue out of the way first. While at first this software seemed pretty simple to set up, it proved to unreliable to be useful. My first problem was when I clicked the 'full screen' button after connecting to one PC. As soon as I clicked the button the remote window disappeared completely! There was no way to get this back other than to go into task manager and end the process. Luckily this closed the connection in a way that the remote machine knew the connection was closed so I was able to connect again.

I'd only been connected for about two minutes when the connection to the remote machine dropped again. The network connection was fine, but there was no way to connect to the machine again. If I hadn't only been in the next room I wouldn't have been able to go check on the state of the machine as BeAnywhere was absolutely unable to connect to it again.

# Better FREE alternatives

Luckily I use LogMeIn (Free version) and I was able to connet with that proving that the network connection and remote machine were fine - it was just BeAnywhere that had failed.

There are a couple of features missing from BeAnywhere that I consider vital to this kind of software.

- BeAnywhere does not appear to support multiple monitors on the remote machine. When connected you get a view of the main screen but cannot view what is being displayed on any second monitor.

- BeAnywhere does not support 'Wake On LAN'. This means that you must leave the remote machine switched on to be able to connect to it. Some other reviews have mentioned that they understand why the machine has to be switched on, but they are missing the fact that most network cards these days support Wake On LAN which mean that the machine can be powered on remotely so long as the mains is conneted.

LogMeIn supports both of the above features.

BeAnywhere is essentially a software wrapper around a web application (you can actually log into the BeAnywhere website and control your computers or add new computers to your account from there - so there is no real need for this USB stick at all!). This is no different to the alternatives such as LogMeIn, GoToMyPC or TeamViewer.

As I've mentioned, I use LogMeIn regularly. The free version is completely free, does not limit you to 3 PCs as this software does, has a simple web interface that can be accessed from any network connected computer with a web browser and has some key features missing from BeAnywhere.

I also use TeamViewer which is ideal for the 'guest invite' type situations that BeAnywhere promotes. Again it's a simple web interface (you can send a link via email or IM or just tell someone which website to go to and enter a code and you can control their computer with their premission). And again IT'S FREE!

I really can't see the point in paying for BeAnywhere when the FREE alternatives are better, in my opinion.

If you need things like remote printing (ie print a document from the remote computer and it be printed on your local printer) then you can pay to upgrade LogMeIn and get a whole host of other additional features as well.

I had high hopes for this as it's packaged quite well, but the product is a big disappointment and will be removed from my machines.

# Summary

Don't buy this until you've had a look at LogMeIn and/or TeamViewer - if they are not for you then fair enough, but you've nothing to lose in checking out free alternatives.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This didn't really work for me and it proved quite unreliable. It seems that if you don't have the kind of setup the manufacturers envisaged, then it's not really going to work.

I was also not prepared to sign up for regular payments and as other reviewers have mentioned, there are free options which will give a comparable service, so I can't see many people taking this up.

I ended up using the USB stick to carry around a few files and this was the most use I got out of it. I don't think I can recommend this , but if you do have a situation where you can leave your home set-up on all the time then it might be worth investigating.

it's OK 16 Dec 2010

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Yes it's easy to set up, and pretty simple to use, but there are flaws, and with cheaper options out there, I won't be subscribing. I can see it's use where large scale projects have to worked on from a variety of locations but the security issues would preclude using this essentially personal solution in any kind of professional environment.

Not for me

Couldn't find a use for it
