This play is one of the best plays I have read in a long time. It's cleverness lies in between the lines and with the characters. From an actor's point of view the play is a challenge as there is not much said that allows to to draw any real conclusions about characterisations.
The beauty of the piece though, lies in the characters. They are almost caricatures of types of people we can all imagine, and have perhaps been parodied in 1980's comedies, such as The Good Life, I can almost imagine Beverly as the Penelope Keith character! We can almost cringe at Beverly's vulgarity and feel so awful for Susan. And what exactly happened when Tony and Laurence visited Abigail's Party? The beauty is the secrets the play holds and is well worth a read and dishes up a great challenge to actors, director and readers alike.
