I've just finished reading Abela and I think it's Berlie Doherty's best book yet! It's really moving and powerful, it really strongly affected my emotions while I was reading and after so I think it'll have a massive effect on young people. It'll be one of those books that they'll never forget. It's also really relevant to contemporary issues without compromising the timeless beauty of the story telling.
As always with her writing it has a really strong visual impact...it would make an amazing film!
I'm just sad I've finished it now...
Bring on the film!

I think that "Abela" has just overtaken "Dear Nobody" as my favourite book by Berlie Doherty!! I love her books so much because you really get the feeling that she's actually there, telling you the story. Or that, in this case, Abela herself is there with you. I really wanted everything to work out for Abela, and I was worrying about her all the way through. I kept imagining that she was my sister... that shows how well this book is written! And, despite everything she went through, it makes me want to visit Africa!! To anybody who is thinking about reading "Abela"... read it!!!

Berlie Doherty always writes as if she cares about her characters and their lives. You'll become involved too. Here she tells us the touching story of Abela, the orphan from Tanzania, and Rosa, who leads an utterly different life in Sheffield. The story holds some surprises and the writing is beautiful.
